I purchased one of these yesterday and I have a few questions.

Specifically, which parts are different from a standard M1A?

Has anyone tried using the SEI Hooded gas lock front sights on a SOCOM?  Will it work? Photos?

I know you are going to tell me I should have bought the 18" squad scout, but I'm a small guy and the SOCOM is just light enough for me to hold it steady.  Even putting an eotech on the rail makes my 16" too heavy, i'd be afraid to have any more weight out there.  Not to mention the scouts are hard to come by right now and all I could find were SOCOMs.

thanks

Regarding the SEI part: I don't believe it will work. The SOCOM16 uses a proprietary lock\muzzle brake that is one piece and if I recall correctly the thread pitch is different compared to other M1A rifles.
A pic of the SOCOM front end apart:

Or keep it and  join those of us with a SOCOM hoping SEI or SA come out with an alternative.

Could be a long wait.

I just spoke with Ron Smith from SEI by email.  He says that his sight will not fit the socom 16.  He says that he would like to make one for the SOCOM, but because some of the changes that SA made were so radically different from the standard M1-A that it will require many expensive tooling changes to create a SOCOM 16 front sight.  On the bright side however, he didn't just shrug me off.  He seemed genuinely interested in helping SOCOM 16 owners and told me that it was possible they may make one in the future.

With the Socom 16 being so wildly popular. I would expect to see that sight sooner than later.

I'm still waiting on mine, 4 to 6 weeks. But with the absolute screaming deal I'm getting I can almost wait

Indeed!

...or just "lump it" with the standard sights.

I've decided to keep it.  I found a friend that will buy it off me if I decide I don't like it.  I'm going to take it out this weekend and see how she performs.

I just posted in the other thread like this that Marc @ Arizona Response Sysytems will thread the SOCOM brake and install a shorty stolle look a like flash suppressor.

From what I've heard, Mark aka Gunplumber does outstanding work.

It's not the comp that I dislike, although, I'm not in love with that either, it's the front sight.  I've read lots of horror stories about it breaking off.  That's why I wondered if the SEI hooded front sight would fit, it's far more durable.

It also seems ironic to me that they use a tritium night sight on a rifle with a comp like that.  I guess you could get one good shot off before you are blinded.
