I have a polytech M14 one of the better ones that came to michigan through canada. My problem is unless its the 20 round chineeses mag that came with the rifle I have to give mags a whack to lock up with the bolt closed....unless its the chineese 20 rounder. It does this with GI mags as well. The same is true to a degree with the bolt locked back. The chineese one is effortless while the others require a little more force but not to the degree when the bolt is closed. Is my mag catch a bit too long? and can I polish it out to work better or is it the  trigger group and how it sits in the receiver on the stock. There is a snug fit when I lock it in but nothing I cant undo without using just hand stregnth to unlock and not use anything to pry it up.Any thoughts Id rather have to fit thje catch because I dont want to touch in spec mags.

I don't know if the mag catch is the root of your problem, but if it is,

DON'T mess with the OEM catch!  At least it works.

Obtain a catch from SA, and fiddle with THAT.

Better yet, get two, in case you mess up.  Then you'll either have a spare, or an unmodified one you can sell.

DO NOT allow the part to heat up as you alter it .  Whether it is hardened or not (and I suspect GI ones were), heating it up will not help matters.  If it is a commercial unit, it may well be somewhat less hard than a true GI, and a spare might come in handy down the road.

This is mostly guesswork, and someone more knowledgeable than myself may come along with a better idea.  Absent that, the above is what I'd do.  YMMV.

IIRQ,  the polys use a metric pin/roll pin channel which is a tad larger than the USGI bolt hold open pin.  This means when you go to put in a USGI catch using the metric pin, the catch is going to bind on the roll pin.

From Eric's M-14 build post tack at the beginning of the forum,

The Chi-Com bolt stop pin came right out when I took it apart, but the USGI one took a pounding to get it in. The pin and stop don’t fit well together. Turns out they don’t work together either, the pin is stuck in the stop and they rotate together rather then the stop rotating on the pin. So, going to have to take it back apart, going to be fun trying to pound that pin out.
