I'm sure that this has been covered alot, but I haven't got in on it.  Why would a person buy a Scout versus a Socom and vis versa?  Do you lose anything on the Socom that you get with the Scout?

Anything you can add would be appreciated.

I have a scout length and a full length, now with that being said...

I believe I have read that the major difference between scout and socom length will show in fps and also energy..... in other words, with the shorter barrel, you will be going a little slower, and with a little less punch....

all that being said if you are inside 300, it prolly won't make a hill of beans difference, but if you are going out to longer ranges I would go the scout length.....

Havoc, what kind of optics are you running on the rifles and what kind of distance are you getting?

Thanks

The 18" Scout barrel will let you run different muzzle devices.

The SOCOM 16 has a fine muzzle break but that's it -- you can't change it.

The U.S. NAVY SEAL's opted for the optimal flash reduction available on the 18" barrel
over the extra blast and reduced velocity of the 16" barrel with it's muzzle break.

I own only one rifle by choice - I chose the 18" Scout.

Looks like your M1A Scout was humped by Optimus Prime.  Nice though.  Very nice!

I have an EOTech and a Leupold Scout scope in EBR rings.

Ron Smith is setting me up with an extra top rail that is modified to accept his 3-point side mount.
This will be perfect for the Mark4 1.5-5X20 M2 W/SPR. Something like this one on azski's rifle.

Optics are great but I will shoot with irons 90% of the time.

Has anyone on here had anything to say negative about their SOCOM?

Yeah, I do!  H2O man had already mentioned it.  SA made the muzzle brake a permanent feature of the SOCOM16 and incompatible with any existing factory and after market muzzle device.  I hate muzzle brakes!   I'm gonna send it to Mongo and have him turn it into a flash suppressor for me

I only have one complaint......That damned muzzle break makes that rifle twice as loud! On the other hand, it also knocks the recoil down to a managable range.

Thanks for the op., I am just trying to make my mind up between a SOCOM and a Scout, at this rate I might as well get both...

If you're gonna do both get a full size rack grade or NM and then a Scout.  I own both a Scout and Full size and a good buddy of mine has a SOCOM.  Now, the SOCOM is a nice handling gun, don't get me wrong, I was impressed.....but you wring a a bit more out of a Scout and you have a lot more versatility with it.  A full size let's you work close....AND FAR.  In the end with both of those you have quite a complete package.

Desrtmoon,

Thanks for the input.... makes sense, what kind of optics are you running on your Scout?

I am not an optic guy.  I have ONE...no, TWO guns with optics and that's it.  An AR with a Panorama III because that's what came with it and my REM700 .300 WM and a giant Leupold.

The guys here should be able to recommend a really good optic....an Aimpoint would be good.  Whatever it is, make sure it is a quality optic....I once had THREE optics....a little Tasco Pro Point that I had on a Ruger MK II.  The Scout melted the guts within two magazines.  Aimpoints, Trijicon heads up stuff, etc.  WON'T MELT, cheap stuff will.

Hey H2O_MAN, nice rifle........

I too chose the scout rifle length , and have found it to be the optimum choice for the type of shooting I do, which is close range out to 600 yds.  If I were forced into combat tomorrow, this is the rifle I would take, and I have quite a bit to chose from here.....

I tried a 2x aimpoint and didn't like it, and am in the process of trying a new eotech 552 on there for closer range.  I did mount a tasco super sniper 10x on there, and got good verifiable hits to 800 yds with no effort at all,,,,, that was on a 24 inch gong at the range using portuguese surplus ammo.  I really like the iron sights on my rifle and use them the most, but maybe the eotech on there will turn out to be my new buddy...lol..
