I have a springfield SOCOM and a couple of 10 and 20 round mags. I bought a bunch of stripper clips and thought it would be a easy way of storing the loose ammo and making the mags easy to load.

Well, not! I have  problem trying to load the mags via the strippers. I tried both a 10 and 20 round mags. I have the mags in the rifle with the bolt locked back. I put the loaded stripper thru the guide and rest it on the upper lip of the mag. When I try to push down the bullets, either with my thumb or with a tool, it requires so much force that the stripper either goes down inside the mag or jams up. They are worthless.

It seems to take a lot of force to move the rounds off the clip.

Is there a trick to it or do I just have a crappy set of clips?

Are they USGI M14 strippers? They could be FAL strippers clips and there's a minute difference. It shouldn't be that hard.

LOL...!

I'm too spastic to use strippers. I usually jam my thumb back or rip my thumbnail.

I haven't noticed any difference in USGI and Aussie clips. They both work fine in my Poly. Is SA Inc. using USGI clip guides or are they going with an aftermarket copy on those as well?

You mentioned that the clip will go inside the magazine.... This is not a normal thing, or even possible with USGI stripper clips and USGI magazines.  Lots of people out there are selling 8mm stripper clips as M14 and 1903 clips.  What brand mags are you using?  Where are you applying pressure on the rounds?  The best way is to press down on the base of the cartridges (nearest the stripper clip) and use 1 fluid motion.  You should be able to load 4 strippers in less than 5 secs.  Its possible there is sand or corrosion under the rails of the clips.  Let them sit in a container of Hoppes or other degreaser for a day, then scrub with a tooth brush /AP brush.  How many "bumps" are there on the sides of your stripper clips?  There should be ONLY 1 stop/bump on each long side of the clip, anymore than 2 total, and they are the wrong clips.   Hope some of this helps... If you need pics of a usgi clip to compare, let me know

Thanks guy, I believe I was sold the wrong clips! I knew there had to be a reason why these things were a PITA.

I ordered a set of USGI ones from Fulton Armory. I bet they work.

Thanks!

FlameRed,
Sportmans guide and Tapco have sales on strippers too.... as well as local gunshows.  Hope the new ones work out for you.  Even with the USGI ones, clean them well, (careful not to leave too much oil if any on them, as they can affect the primers.) and run them through some rounds a few times to smooth out the parkerizing.  Again, hope this helps.

Running junk cases through them is a good idea for the reasons mentioned above.  Running good, reloadable cases through them will eventually damage the cases.

Try the Aussie 7.62 clips, they have worked for me and have the one bump on the side of the clip.

They even work in my 8mm Mauser and 1903A3!
