The barrel is marked:

"7.62 NATO M11"
"S-A- 2-52"

So it is a 7.62x51 conversion barrel .... the 2-52 date is suspicious to me since 7.62x51 NATO was not yet born in 1952.  So how could they make a 7.62 NATO barrel in 1952?

I think it is a 30.06 barrel originally and was converted to 7.62 NATO.  What is the likely method of conversion?

The owner of this rifle claims that this is one of those early NAVY Garand that was converted using chamber inserts.  I thought this method of conversion was problematic and unsafe,  so the NAVY redid all the chamber insert conversion by installing true 7.62 NATO chambered barrel?

Any thought?

Thanks

This is one of those tough ones.

For that reason, I suggest asking THE experts on the Battle Rifle forum.
Likely, they will be able to ID this one.

Most likely an Italian conversion.  Measure it and you will probably find it is 1/2 inch shorter than a standard M1.

These take a shorter stock, oprod and spring as well.
