The side three point design aka Brookfield design is less prone to shifting than the two point mounts. There's a hodgepodge of scope mounts in use by the military right now on M14 rifles as many GIs are buying them individually. The Smith Enterprise and Sadlak Industries mounts are excellent IMHO. See my free online Scope Mount FAQ at www.imageseek.com/m1a |
| The Brookfield is the standard by which all others are judged. It will run you $350 +or- "if" you can find one.The Smith is a clone of the Brookfield so what does that tell you???many people like the A.R.M.S but I really think that's because they are a bigger/higher profile company than Smith which is a clone of the best. |
| The Armscorp mount is essentially a twin of the Brookfiedl Precision Tool mount. The Smith Enterprise and Sadlak Industries mounts are improved versions of the Brookfield design. BPT mounts were not produced after 1996. The A.R.M.S. mount is also excellent as long as your receiver geometry is close to USGI dimension. |
| Diff, your thoughts on the ARMS 18? I just ordered one. I like it because it sits low enough to use irons without a channel (as on my BPT), though on the BPT I can use the channel AND scope. My Scout is late, 150xxx, so will I need to get the Dremel to the inside edges of the ARMS? What about the OLD ARMS 18 with two mounting pads? Cool that the action is open, but doesn't give much in the way of mounting options. |
The ARMS # 18 mount is excellent. The old style ARMS # 18 mount does not give you any wiggle room. You'll have to mate up an ARMS #18 mount to your particular receiver to see if there are any problems. Not all recent M1A receivers have scope mount fitting problems. If you "Dremel" the mount, GO SLOW. As with any scope mount you buy, read the instructions before you begin the installation. I know this is stating the obvious but some folks need the gentle encouragement to do it right the FIRST time. |
Thanks, points well made and taken. My theory is that slow is preferred as you can always take more off, but you can't put it back on

I just put a set of #22 QD rings on my ARMS #18 Old Style mount. Seems to hold zero just fine, but I never fire anything but M80 spec military surplus and my rifle is a straight service rifle M1A. I like my set-up. Can't wait for the tax refund to get here so I can get an Aimpoint. |
Someone post a link where this can be bought! |

DT, BPT discontinued sales to the public about 8-9 years ago and then I believe discontinued the manufacture completely after satisfying military sales / contract. It is a badass mount to be sure, IMHO, the best. It is the original that everyone copies and was what was put together to answer the military need in the XM25 sniper program. You can find them on epay, the gun acutions, EE, gunboards, CSP exchange, etc. from time to time in the range of $300 to $450. The Smith is a copy and has an NSN. To be honest, I would bet the Smith is just as good and the rail has more notches for more mounting options and flexibility. I paid $200 for my BPT right when they announced no more for public sales. It's an exceptional mount that others copy and has a bit of "collector" value. However, if I wanted this style mount, I'd buy the Smith NSN and spend the extra $200 on rings or ammo AB
