What's the difference between the M1A Scout and the Standard full size model? If I had a Scout model, could I just change the barrel out to make a full size M1A?

The difference is the 18" barrel, Scout scope mount and matching hand guard.
Yes you could change all three items and make it a full-size M1A.
If you do make this change you can go with a chrome lined barrel.

You could swap out barrels if you started with a Scout model. But Scouts are generally more expensive, and by the time you bought another barrel, you might as well have waited to find the Standard model you were looking for. Not to mention the headaches if for some reason your bolt doesn't headspace correctly. As I understand it, changing M1A barrels isn't nearly as easy as swapping out AR barrels.

To answer the question in the title of your post  Scout vs. Standard?

As I have said many times...
IMHO the Scout Squad version of the M14 type rifle is the best all-around battle rifle made.
Everyone should own one

So couldn't one just switch out the barrel, keep the scope mount and handguard?

Actually, you can simply order the handguard and scope mount seperate, and mount them on a Standard. Again, no need to swap out the barrel.

I shot my scout for the first time about a month ago.  Was anyone else surprised at the lack of recoil?  Man it's a sweet shooter!
