I'm seriously thinking of joining the CMP and aquiring a M1 Garand as a plinking/hunting rifle.  My question is this; most states have magazine limits for semi-auto rifles to be used for hunting, but since the Garand doesn't have a magazine per se would it be safe to assume those laws don't apply to the M1?

Also, how many of you here hunt with your Garands?

There are modified clips for the Garand that hold 5, 3, 2 and 1 rounds.

I don't know about hunting laws, however.

M60--Cheaper than dirt has 5rnders for about $5 or 6. I've seen them at local gun shows for about the same price. I think Midway has them. Lots of vendors should have them available. Just find one you've dealt with before and liked, and check their inventory. I will eventually get one for the same reason, but I will give you a generic ammo warning: Not all factory .30'06 can be run through a Garand safely. If you reload already, this is a moot point, but if you're like me and haven't set that up yet, be careful with factory loads.

Is there any way to modernize a Garand so it can handle current factory ammo?

Thanks for the other info... I ordered some just a min ago from CTD.

just buy 150gr ammo and you should be fine
I shoot new production PMC 150gr FMJ out of mine

Production 150 grain ammo should be fine. If you insist on shooting 165-180 grainers, there's an adjustable gas port or something for a few bucks that is supposed to save your op rod. I'll shoot 180's in my other rifles, but for the Garand, I don't mind sticking with the 150's.

ETA: check local hunting laws. In FL, even though it's not an actual magazine, it still is a semi-auto with more than 5 rounds, so it's illegal without one of the smaller clips.

you can check with game and inland fisheries for clarification and possible updates,
but
a few years ago i hunted with a m1 and an  m1a
at that time virginia had no limit on rifle rounds, only shotguns
just make sure the county you hunt in allows rifles and does not have any other restrictions

So pretty much any 150 grain stuff should be okay? I really need ammo for my M1, but I don't want to blow it up. Also, they make 150 gr SPs, right?

IIRC the problem with factory stuff is you do not know what type of powder it is loaded with
M1's are designed for a specific pressure curve and who knows what the commercial ammo is loaded with,
you can always try "mexican match" hunting ammo, as is pulling a 147 or 150gr ball and replacing with the same weight hunting bullet,,,,right???

Should look for a 5rd clip to go hunting.  Besides, how many times are you gonna kill that deer?????

then why not single load???
no flame intended, but, why go to the hassle of buying a clip that you don't need
if you need to load less than 8, then insert a clip with less than eight in it
find an old highpower guy, they can show you how to do it

True, but would that be good enough for the game warden if/when he inspects your rifle and finds your clips allow more rounds then state law allows

The adjustable gas plug you're looking for is the Schuster adjustable gas plug. It installs in place of the stock plug, It adjusted by using allen head screws that screw into the center of the gas plug. Each screw has a diffrent size hole drilled in it to allow more or less gas to bleed out of the gas cylinder and you can adjust the gas system for diffrent powders heavier bullets without damaging your op-rod. Ask around over at the jouster forum,   www.jouster.com someone over ther will know where Shuster's website is, I don't think these things cost very much, they can be easily removed and don't alter the rifle.

The M1Garand does have a magazine. It is an internal fixed magazine. The magazine is fed by the enbloc clips. ( That is why they are clips. Clips are used to feed a magazine. A magazine is used to feed a firearm)

I made an adjustable gas plug for my Garand. I use W760 powder and 200 gr HPBT bullets. W760 powder would damage a Garand with a standard gas system. With my set up, the brass gets ejected with less energy than a standard M2 Ball ammo in a standard Garand.

I use a full 8rd clip when I hunt with my Garand and I carry 3 full clips as back up.

I will assume that your question was meant for me. I cannot stand running low or out of ammo. When I am out hunting, there are thousands of others out doing the same thing. Most are just regulars Joes like me, but a few are bad folks. Bad folks that are well armed. I have no desire to be in the woods with just a couple of rounds if I happen to cross paths with one of the bad folks.

Gotcha.....the bad folk be me usually reside in the city.  When they come upstate ( cant understand why they would....or even hunt for that matter.....never saw one hunting before),,,but they wold stick out like a flea on white rice.
Or better put, like a "bad guy" in the snow
