I got one of these 1 1/2 years ago that was pratically unfired. It wasn't NIB but it was very new looking and included the original 5rd mag still in the wrapper and cosmoline. I have since put upwards of 1500 rds through it and was just wondering what the quality of these are. I haven't had any problems, I was just wondering. Search amounted to nothing. Any help will be appreciated WIZZO BTW I payed $600 for it. |

its a fine rifle. Just need to check the headspace every so often if you intend to shoot .308 instead of 7.62 nato through it. The headspace can become excessive for .308 but is within spec for 7.62 Everything on the rifle is good except maybe the bolt, ugly stock and rear sight. And even then its not bad on all of them. I have one myself and its great for what they cost. And its a forged receiver to boot. |

I agree with D Duck. The Polytechs have a fine reputation for high quality receivers. Mine is wonderful. They were told along with Norinco that their bolts were soft, however, and tended to develop excessive headspace in a fairly short time. This can be corrected early on with the install of a GI bolt. It's not an expensive proposition but if done early enough, should allow you to keep the barrel. I had to have my bolt and barrel replaced but the receiver and trigger group are just fine. I've also retrofitted a GI stock. It's the best shooter of all my semi-auto, period. If you'd like to read a ton about the M14 and these rifles in particular, go here: http://www.imageseek.com/m1a/welcome.html Open the yellow link; "History and Development of the M14 rifle" You'll want to print it off for your library. It's the best tretise I've read about these rifles and will tell you virtually everything you'll need to know. Rome |

Thanks guys, I'm shooting mostly surplus stuff from South Africa and India. The Indian stuff has M80 on the wrapper, so I assume it's 7.62 NATO. I also took the wood stock off and raplaced it with a good-looking GI Synthetic stock I got at a funshow for $25. A little tight, but it fit really well and doesn't wiggle at all. The rear sight is the standard M14 sight as it only goes up to "11" but I'm really happy with it and if I want another, there is one at the local funshop in about the same condition for $700 WIZZO |
ummmm I think the ammo your shooting has been bad for some rifles lately. Most people tend to stay away from the SA and India ammo. Aussie is really good. |

Good to know. I might have to drop the ball and invest a little more money in the Aussie ammo. This is actually really good timing, because i'm going to a funshow tomorrow and will try to keep an eye out for some good Aussie prices. Thanks again, WIZZO BTW, any other brands/countries to buy/avoid. |

Thanks for the replys. Went to a funshow today and spent a little more for SA in battle packs over the Indian. $160 for 980 rds of the SA and a BIG ammo can he threw in for free. The Indian was a little cheaper, but wasn't cheap enough for me to go out on a limb and risk it...........anymore WIZZO Thanks for pointing me in a different direction than the Indian. |
| I think the discoloring at the neck you are referring to is from the annealing process. My Portuguese shows a great deal of this, but it's still top grade. Recent Indian is the problem ammo, and several of late have even taken a chance on older (1970's) Indian and been happy, but the recent stuff for sure is shit. |
