I have a winchester garand that functions fine however the ejected brass has a flat spot one one side of the head. any idea what could cause this?

The OP-Rod is connecting with spent case when it is ejected, nothing to worry about, shoot and enjoy.

O.K. any way to fix this ? I'd like to reload but the brass is pretty beat up.

When you re-size the cases, that should take care of them.

Absolutely normal behavior with many M1's.  The hump on the op-rod whacks the case during ejection.

Good advice so far.  If the situation bothers you still, do the following.  De-grease the portion of the op-rod showing brass strikes.  Apply a strip of black velcro to that ares.  Experiment between the fuzzy side and the "hook" side and see which works best.  HTH.
