Hi Guys, Dumb question but what is the physical difference between a Pre-ban M1A and a Post-ban M1A. Is it simply that one was made prior to the 1994 AWB and the rest after? I've been looking at the Gunbroker and GunsAmerica auctions and see a lot of Pre-ban M1A's (with the associated mark-up). FYI: Description for Item # 27418151 Pics of camo stock installed are not loading due to GB tech problems. Email me and I will send you pics of the camo stock if you can not see the pic showing it installed. All original SA (Preban 94).308. Comes with SA mags (3); SA scope mount, SA 14x54 3rd Gen Lit Ret scope with original box/papers, hood, SA Bi-pod, sling. Installed brand new mil-spec,(made for military) Vietnam era Camo stock with select-fire notch, original black fiberglass stock shown. There has been only one 20 round mag through this for test, otherwise in mint condition. Stored in demudified safe. I am not aware of another .308 rifle that can exceed this M1A type for accuracy, durability, and shear firepower at long ranges. Add $25. for shipping. " This gem is listed for $2,999.00 Same with this one: Description for Item # 27497038 "Preban" U.S Rifle 7.62-m (.308) M1A Springfield Armory. Brush/tanker .308 with original Military (Vietnam Era) camo stock (even has cutout for selector). Rifle manufactured by SA with original Military parts. Excellent condition. Rifle was bought about 18 years ago and just sits in the safe. Feel free to offer me any other "info" on this rifle. Buyer to pay with cashier check or money order, and pay for "over-night" shipment only, from CA (required). Any questions please contact me at [email protected] or AOL & Yahoo IM @ kauaikit. Thank you Thanks guys. any info is appreciated. I'm looking to pick one up this year and figured this is a great place to start. RJ |
| The older the M1A the more GI parts it will likely have for one thing. The price on the 1st M1A seems awfull high. The S.A. scope mount will serve you well as a paperweight. Many people will say the same about the S.A. scope itself. Also,if the bipod is the G.I. type that attaches to the gas cylinder, you will soon be taking it off when you see how bad it beats up your stock. |

The only difference between pre- and post-ban M1As was the bayonet lug. Post-ban guns had the lug milled off. Note that all Bush and Scout rifles have the lug milled off whether they are pre- or post-ban. There isn't enough clearance between the lug and the gas cylinder plug to get it out if you don't mill it off. The only other advantage of a pre-ban gun was that you could legally mount a pistol-gripped or folding/telescoping stock on it before the ban went sunset. This is only relevant now if you live in a state that has their own ban. The GI parts count has been hit or miss over the years. Some old pre-bans have hardly any GI parts also. You just have to know what you're looking for when you inspect the rifle. |

The pre or post ban dilemma wasn't really much of an issue for M1A's.A post ban came with a flash hider with the bayo lug milled off and obviously the ability to take high cap mags.So there's your 2 evil features. So now you can't have a pistol grip(which it didn't anyway, except for some pretty rare wood stocks),a collapsible stock(very un functional) or a bayo lug.Well, you can live without a bayo lug.It was a bigger deal with AR15's where people were stuck with pistol grips/high cap mags but couldn't put on that collapsible stock that everybody wanted, which is useless anyway if your over 5' tall. But it does have that cool low speed/high drag look. So all you're really missing out on is a bayo lug if you go with a post ban. |
