When the 7th round tries to feed, the nose crosses over and jams up at about 10 or 11 o'clock. It doesn't do it on every 7th round but enough to be a concern. Also, when shooting one round at a time, about 25% of the time the bolt will not lock back. Are these ailments realted? Any ideas on what to check? Thanks! |

Things to do/check: AMMO. Is this USGI or GI SPEC ammo? The M1 was designed to work with USGI M2 ball ammo with the 150 grain bullet, loaded with GI ball powder. ANY differences in ammo may cause stoppages. CLEAN the rifle and lube properly with GREASE. (The M1 REQUIRES grease, NOT oil). Check the gas system for leaks. Look for soot leaking from around the gas cylinder anywhere. Check the gas cylinder lock screw to be sure it's tight, AND check the valve in it to be sure it's not sticking open slightly or simple worn out and letting gas leak out. Replace the recoil spring. Check ALL rifle components for worn, cracked, chipped, broken, or altered parts. Check the bolt and op rod for free travel by disassembling the rifle. With the gas system in place, the op rod and bolt in place, and all other components removed, tip the rifle muzzle up and down. The op rod and bolt should freely open and close under their own weight. Most stoppages of this sort or due to weak recoil springs, improper cleaning and lubing with grease, leaking gas system, improper ammunition, or defective parts. |
This is the kind of asshat reply that brings this forum down. Faris posted several points to help out and you pick one that best fits your desire to be stupid. If you don't have anything that will contribute STFU. ![]() mark |

faris has given great info, but lets start off with the simple stuff first... The Garand has been known for the 7th round Jam/Ejection.. First thing... Are you loading your Enbloc's yourself, or using Danish/Korean/M-2 Ball on preloaded clips?... If you are loading your own, What side does your last round end up on?... Do you have a copy of FM 23-5? pay attention to section 4. and 6. Hope this helps |

I'm right handed so I loaded the clips to have the last round on the right. I think that my problem leis in letting some copper cleaner get into the gas system and gumming up the piston/bore. It was full of green sticky goo. A good douching and thorough greasing later I am ready to take it back to the range for another session. I can see the bolt not locking back with a sticky gas system, but if has enough pressure to get the bolt behind the round in the clip will less forward pressure cause the round to jam? Is this the cause of the "7th round jam" R-32 referred to, or are there other causes? Thanks for the input guys! |

Im sure the sticky gas system is going to be a big part of it...That should be clean and Dry... Another common thing with some rifles is to make sure your last round you load is on the right, that will make the last round (bottom) in your Enbloc on the left...( I have a couple Garands that are very picky, and I have a couple that It just dont matter)... I would make sure your clips are loaded the same, and clean and dry your gas system before moveing onto anything else... and print out a copy if FM 23-5, lots of good info.... |
Lighten up. He was right the first time, even though he was not very discriptive. He hit the nail on the head the second time. |
