i didn't want to hijack another thread, so:

i have a Springfield Armory M1 Garand, 1944 dated barrel and reciever.

its pretty worn cosmetically and i can see the barrel has a bend to the right, just above the first step down in diameter - its not severe but the op rod binds  - i had to look long at it to see it

can this barrel be straightened or should i just rebarrel?

Take it to a good smith just to make sure...if it is bent, well, it's time to rebarrel. now you have a choice to make, rebarrel in 30-06, or .308 champion's choice does the .308 bbl using a new Wilson or Douglas,(I'm not sure) tube for around $2-250 complete, nothing special needed for .308 conversion, everything works the same including the en-bloc's all you need is a new tube, dean, at DGR also does rebarrels I'm sure others will chime in. With a little work, (maybe re park, new wood or glass bed the old wood if it's not in too of bad shape, and the stock itself isn't a collectable) and a new barrel you can have a tack driver

You can straighten the barrel if it is not bent to badly, and depending on where it bent.  If you haven't a clue how one would do this, then find a gunsmith that knows or find a friend that works in a machine shop that's willing.

I have a FAL that was a like new kit and when it was sighted in it shot about 24" low at 50 yds.  That's low!  After agonizing about this and thinking a different barrel was in order, I started thinking about straightening it.  A long story short here, I ended up with a damn good shooter that shoots every bit as good and better than most I've shot or seen.

I don't know why one could not straighten a Garand barrel.  But, then again if the barrel is worn out or nearly so, might be better off with a different barrel.

My two cents.

machaira, +1 on the .308 conversion with a bedded wood stock. If you ever happen out to the Eastern part of the state you're more than welcome to try one out for yourself.

thanks for the info, folks.

Keith:  i grew up in fayetteville so i go down there fairly often.  might take you up on a shoot.

looks like the .308 barrel will be the way to go.  i may still try to straighten the old barrel first - nothing ventured nothing gained.  it gauged 3 on the throat erosion gauge but it 's pretty worn at the crown - probably cleaned to death.
