| My friend has a new M-1 from Springfield that has a problem. It appears that about 75% of the time the hammer is following the bolt forward instead of cocking after a firing a shot. The rifle hand cycles fine. The fired round ejects and a new round is feed. We tried using differnet ammo both Korean and German surplus but had the same problem. He has returned the rifle to the gunsmith he purhcased it from but the problem continue. I have had great customer service for SA and suggested he return it to them for repair. Any thoughts on what the problem is with this rifle? |

I suggest you make S.A. fix the problem, rather than fixing it yourself and possibly voiding your warranty should you need it again in the future. If there are problems with parts/assembly with the S.A. M1, how will S.A. know about it and correct same if you don't tell them by sending the thing back? Call them, and arrange to have the rifle shipped back, preferably at their expense. You paid a lot of money for that rifle, at least some of which was for a warranty. Get your money's worth, and use the warranty. Oh, BTW, that hammer-follow is a highly unsafe condition. I would not fire that rifle with any kind of live ammo in that condition. |

In the interim, is the trigger group a USGI M1 group or a Springfield reproduction. Look for part numbers on the hammer and other parts. Numbers molded in indicates reproduction, cast parts. The other item to check is the gas system. If the gas cylinder is oversized or the gas piston on the end of the oprod is undersized (both from wear) the rifle can short cycle. Finally check the chamber. A rough chamber will slow the extraction and bolt movement. The advice to send it to SA should be heeded. -- Chuck |
