Been weighing the idea of picking up a Benjamin Discovery.
Was wondering if any here had input as to whether it's a good rifle or if I should just get a Marauder and be done. I already have a BSA Ultra but I'm looking for something cheaper as a knock around rifle. |
| For what it's worth I started with a Discovery, sold it, and went to a Marauder. The Marauder is so customizable and what really sold it for me is the 10 round rotary magazines and built in sound dampener. The Discovery is literally 3 times louder than the Marauder and my M-Rod doesn't run off the game after the first shot. |

Discovery is a very good rifle, and it can be had for significantly less money than the Marauder. I got mine (a.22) for $229.00 as a refurb from Benjamin. Having already purchased a Marauder .25, I had already bought the hand pump & a Ninja 4500 PSI tank and Benjamin fill kit. This made getting into a Discovery a no-pain proposition, for me. I also got a TKO muzzle device which quieted the Discovery considerably.
PCP airguns are not a cheap proposition, but once you get over the initial investment, they are well worth it, IMO. I find the Discovery to a great backyard critter gitter, with the TKO. |

I've used two Discoveries, a .22 and a .177, one had the extra screws mod on the barrel band.
Both had point of impact shift as the pressure declined, both had very narrow pressure sweet spots. Each got just a few shots in the sweet spot. POI shift is a known Discovery problem. Both rifles were loud, used a lot of air per shot and had poor triggers. All of these things are known Disco issues. Discos are light and very nice for wander and shoot plinking but are not as accurate as many shooters are. Marauders are bigger and heavier, they can have an excellent trigger, make a lot less noise and have ten shot magazines. My Mrod used too much air per shot, had a narrow pressure sweet spot and just did not have the accuracy I wanted. Some are accurate, if you win the Crosman barrel lottery, but the odds are stacked against you. Affordable and accurate PCP rifles include the CZ s200 / AA 200s, AA 400, 410, 500, 510. Used is often OK. I would love to have a Disco with a great trigger, excellent accuracy, low air use per shot and a wide sweet spot. Since that is not made, I don't have a Disco but do have a CZ s200. BTW, BAM 50 and 51 rifles can be found, they can have all the attributes mentioned above but do feel bulky. They are a copy of the Daystate Huntsman. |
| I've enjoyed my regulated .22 Mrod. Accurate and fairly quiet. However, I'm on the waiting list for one of these. Initial user reviews are favorable. |

I have 3 cz 200's (two target, one not), an Mrod, and a Talon SS (and 2 pcp pistols). So of course I am also looking for my next pcp I got the Mrod as a referb for a Disco price. It is a ton of fun. I got it while the Talon was in transit - so it really wiped the initial joy away from the Talon. Added to that the Talons co2 valve was doa (I got an exchange, and it sat in my truck for 10 months. Well, wanted to do some ratting this weekend - the CZ's were not rigged for night, the Mrod was way to powerful for garage shooting. So pulled out a mpp Friday night and had an ok time (it was not good for night either). Saturday night, popped on the CO2 on the talon (it was rigged for night) and had a blast with low power laser ratting. Enough power to kill, but not so much as to pop holes through my wall. Everything has it's place. The CZ would work great for this too - but I bet I can get 1000 shots per paintball cylinder out of the talon. |

Since you mentioned the 850... The 850 was released in 98 as a pcp called the 1250. Largely forgotten (currently $550 from pyramid), a regulated pcp with an upgraded trigger (from the 850). One issue is they used a 300 bar pressure tube. Anyway, Walther is currently releasing the R8. The R8 looks like a BSA R10. Probably HEAVILY based on the 1250, but upgraded to a wood stock and (200 bar) bottle. No US prices yet. In a way it is somewhat tempting. It will probably bee in the 600-700 range, so still a bit more than a pcp'ed 850. If you are looking at Mrods, I have seen favorable reviews of the Rainstorm. It is a bit more than the Mrod - but perhaps is a bit more gun as well. |
| The rainstorm is hard to stay away from. With only tightening the hammer spring Manny from Hawaii was getting 50fpe for 20 shots in 22. it's got a bigger cylinder than the Mrod, is lighter, but costs more. In the end, to get the mrod even with a rainstorm you would be spending rainstorm price plus, but it's not made in the US, so warranty would be better on the mrod side I guess. |

I got suckered into an Mrod (by luck). I am a bit infatuated with the Edgun. Had been seeing various potential bullpup stocks being made for the Mrod to make it into a budget imitation. Till I could afford to go that route, I ordered a Talon SS. A day or two latter I saw Referbed Mrods for $350 (iirc). Well, I could postpone a scope, but not a deal like that - so the Mrod ended up making it to my house before the Talon arrived. For a long bit it was really hard to like the Talon, the Mrod is much nicer in many ways - but now I am shooting the Talon more than the Mrod (mostly because it is set up for night and CO2 at the moment). The Talon is a bit of an air hog - but CO2 is just so cheep. Filling my 4500psi tank is $8, but about an hr drive... The last week or so I have been bit by the bug again and am researching. Thinking of getting a BBQ gun-something other than entry level. Probably not top tier, but still nice. I just have not wrapped myself arround some of the astetics of the Daystate, RAW and FX guns yet. Not willing to pop $2500 on an Edgun either - So thinking of something between a TX200 or HK97 to between a AA 510 or HW100. |
