I really like the looks of this mini-14 and would like to buy it, I've found out that the handguard is a choate, but I am a little unsure as to the model number of the rifle itself.

In the comments the guy says it's a 180, but it doesn't have the exposed bolt hold open device.  Any ideas?

Correction:

Blain is correct 180 had the external lever and 181 began the button style to allow mounting of optics.

You're incorrect about the bolt hold open.  It actually has the push button Op rod style, if you look where he attaches the scope, you can see that there is NO external bolt hold open mechanism on the side of the receiver.

I think that rifle might actually be the series 181 as shown here.

Nothing special.  It's just a pre-Ranch Rifle (pre 2004) standard blued Mini-14, (could be any 181 to 197 series), with a Choate handguard and bipod attached.  There are several thousand in circulation.

From what I understand, he's wrong about the chamber.  I've researched this a little and supposedly they ARE chambered for 5.56.  But I don't own one.  So, check with the factory if you're going to do it and not sure.  But I'm pretty sure they'll tell you it is a 5.56 chamber.

Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Ruger states the rifles are actually chambered for 5.56. I emailed them last year for clarification. I have fired plenty of 5.56 through my 182 series stamped ".223"

The only Mini 14's that aren't 5.56 rated are the Target models.
