Recently bought a 187 Mini 14 from my uncle. The first thing I changed on it was the stock which is now an ATI Strikeforce Stock with a full aluminum upgrade set (Rails and buffer tube). I'm looking for way to make it more accurate at 100 yards as it currently is making 1.5" 3-shot groups at 25 yards. My current plans are to install a recoil buffer and a tunable gas block, and later on install a Mo-rod and a muzzle brake (added weight on the end of the barrel) with an integral barrel tuner. Is there anything else I should do to help the accuracy of my Mini? I'm not changing the stock back so please don't waste your time with that one.

Re crowning the muzzle, a trigger job, glass bedding the receiver and cryo stress relieving the barrel are popular mods according to the interweb.

Finding the rifles favorite ammo and getting serious trigger time should come first though.

I'm using Norinco cases (and primers) with Hodgdon Varget powder and Hornady 70gr GMX Bullets. I installed a higher compression recoil spring and a tunable gas block. At this point I can make a 1MOA 3-Shot group at 100 yards, and a 1.5 MOA 3-Shot group at 200.

Have you tried to use different weight bullets? My 183 series hates 55 and 62 gr but it will put 50 gr at a 1.25" at 100 with open sites off bench. Fussy as hell with ammo. Other than that I would suggest maybe looking at accuracy internationals website and see if anything they offer tweaks your interest. They do quite a few new barrel styles that all offer pretty good accuracy out of the mini.

Yeah, mine is a fussy eater too. She shoots 68+ gr without any issues, but 62 gr throw wide groups and 55 gr likes to keyhole. Now I'll probably pick up a box of 50 gr to see if it work at all. I got the AI tunable gas block and high power recoil spring and it made a huge difference.

Joe I have had GREAT luck buying 50 gr ammo from wal mart. Federal ammo in white box. JHP. Not very nice for hunting but they have no key holed from my rifle and like I said, groups arent bad for an old mini. Let me know how you roll with yours. Some day I would love to have one w a barrel that ate heavy ammo. Something short and NASTY like.

your 183 has a 1 in 7 twist right? are the 50 gr bullets longer than the 55 gr? Just seems illogical that the lighter (and presumably shorter) bullet would work better with that barrel twist, either way i'll try it out sometime.

Ah, that would be why it like the 50gr, mine is a 1 in 7 and over spins the shorter/lighter bullets

Early Mini's had 1-10 twist barrels and from roughly '88 to '96-ish they had 1-7 twist 96-ish they switched to 1-9 and TTBOMK have been 1-9 since.
