I'm starting my third ground up build.
I have a Noveske lower. What would be a really good lightweight barrel/handguard combo for competition? I was thinking LaRue barrel and Gegoosely or MI handguard? I've built with DD before. BCM makes lightweight complete uppers, but not sure what the opinion on those is vs. a ground-up build. |

Whichever route you go, and especially for competition, you will want an adjustable gas block to tailor the gas to the load you are shooting, or for a suppressor, or both.
Properly adjusting gas reduces perceived recoil and reduces perceived roughness in cycling, and will have benefits in competition, including faster follow up shots. I can't get to the prices of some factory made uppers adding up the cost of the very best components, even adding gunsmithing costs if you don't true/square/blueprint or assemble yourself.... I love BCM's KMR hand guards. Light and feel great in the hand. And so save some $'s at the cost of just a bit more weight the Alpha all aluminum versions are also great, especially for an SBR where there isn't much gained in weight savings on the shorter handguards going with the original magnesium KMR. What type of competition? Even 3 gun has some long range shots out to 400-500 yards. I normally run a 7.5" with KX3 and Eotech in local 2/3gun, most everything is inside 75yd and rarely anything over 100yd. I personally wouldn't go shorter than 14.5" if I had targets out that far. I might be a little slower on followups on the longer shots, but I more than make up for it on the door-kicking / shoothouse stages.

| The MI rail is going to be lighter and thinner then the ALG, and it will come with an Mlok rail section. I honestly go 12.5'' for a competition sbr, it's still as short as my 10'' AK's, but still has enough velocity even with xm193 to get consistent hits out to 300 yards. I went with Faxon for my 12.5 barrel because AIM had the barrel, and a pinned gas block combo for a good deal. I'm glad did because the barrel is very accurate with my handloads, |

There are more than a few Wylde chambered 12.5" barrels available, including one from ARP. I'm pretty sure WOA offers them as well, but you have to order through a dealer.
I have a WOA 10.5" Wylde chambered barrel. Shoots great Theoretically, as you seem to know, a Wylde chambered barrel has more accuracy potential, all else equal. I don't think any potential accuracy advantage is going to realized, or at least recognizable, unless you are shooting off a bench or bipod. For a 12.5" competition rifle you might want mid length gas plus an adjustable gas block for smooth shooting with minimal felt recoil. JPK |
