So I've always read to close the adjustable gas block and open it up slowly until it looks the bolt back. Only run one round in the magazine. Once the bolt locks back open it up one or two clicks more depending on what you feel is acceptable.
I read today in a magazine to open the block all the way and basically do this in the opposite direction. So you'll be closing it until the bolt locks back. My guess is it doesn't matter either way but just curious as to how others do it or why one way is superior. |

Best way to do it, with the least amount of shots fired is, close it all the way. Then count how many turns it takes to open it all the way and close it halfway. Let's say it takes 10 clicks to get to the half way point. If you have to open or close the block based off your first shot, open or close it half of the remaining clicks, so 5 clicks, then 2-3 clicks and finally 1 click. The idea is to keep dividing the amount of available click in half. |
| My SLR Sentry 7 has a total of 15 or 16 clicks IIRC. I shut it off initially, opened 2-3 clicks, started shooting one shot at a time until it locked back reliably with low power ammo, then opened up 1 or 2 more clicks. Evertime I clean the rifle, I put a drop of Ed's Red on the screw, open up all the way, then shut it down all the way before cleaning my bore. Be sure to reopen the screw after cleaning! For me 7 clicks is totally reliable. During the initial adjusting process, before I was getting enough gas to eject the spent casing, I clearly remember some empties being VERY hard extract. I remember once trying to see how soft I could set it after break in that I had to morter the rifle to clear the chamber. YMMV. Now I just always go 7 clicks and all is good. Rifle feels like a .22 . |
