So I'd love to build an SBR or 5 and have a silencer. I live in GA. I have my CCW... does that matter? Anyone around here that can list the steps for me. I have looked on the Internet, but it's confusing. Also I've heard conflicting info at the gun shops. Thanks guys.

It's not as difficult as people think. There's two avenues:

1: as an individual: buy item at local dealer, fill out paperwork, get passport photo/fingerprints/signature from police chief, send it paperwork to ATF with $200 check, wait for it to come back and pick up your item.

2: as a corporation/trust: buy item at local dealer, fill out paperwork, send to ATF with $200 check, wait for it to come back and pick up your item

method 2 is the best way to go and it will be the only option if you have an anti-gun police chief who refuses to sign NFA forms.

That is the simple way.

If you actually want to build...

Buy some lowers.

(optional) build them up and test them out under a normal upper half.

Fill out your Form 1 (in duplicate) for each upper

Go either Route 1 or Route 2 from above post. (passport pics & CLEO sig or Trust)

Wait for the ATF to send you your stamps.

Have lowers engraved with required info

Buy/build short uppers.

I did my SBR through a revocable living trust as in the state of Florida, it is very uncommon to have a senior law enforcement officer sign off...the trust has the status of a living individual without being alive, and have committed transgressions that would preclude CLEO signature.... the trust has possession of the SBR, and as the grantor and trustee of the trust, I have use of it, as well as any other trust members...the provisions of the trust describe the disposition of the SBR upon my death... I filed the paperwork by mail, and took a little over 4 months to receive the approval..

I had the name of the entire trust laser engraved into the lower receiver, including the "The" at the beginning of the name

BATFE has the on line form 1 so the information can be typed in

line 1 tax paid, enclose check for $200
line 2 check corporation or other
line 3b name and address of the trust, not your name
3d,e county, phone number
4 name and address of lower manufacturer, short barrel rifle, serial number, model, and rest of length and caliber specifics
4h complete name of the trust and address
4i sporting and collecting
4j no
7 signature
8 my name grantor/trustee
9 date

on back
all of 10 and 11

nothing else on the form 1

this form is returnee with the tax stamp affixed and  approval and date on bottom

I sent in an entire package by mail
copy of the revocable trust
an additional form stating that you are a US citizen
check for $200
form 1
good luck

It is not hard, just tedious and you need patience. There is more than enough info on this site to answer most any question you may have.

Join the club, it's fun!

For me the only part of it that was a mild PITA was getting my witnesses together with the notary when I did my trust. The actual ATF form submission (e-filing) has been easy as pie.

Contact Jake Hinton [email protected]. He runs a shop called Quiet Riot Firearms just south of Atlanta. Sells a ton of suppressors. He helped me out getting my trust setup and has been very helpful with the whole process. I now have 4 suppressors and 2 SBRs.

Thanks guys for all the info. So it's easier than it looks, just need some patience. I think it just sounds like a daunting task. Really just need to jump through a few hoops and do a rain dance. I wish they'd just realize SBR's should be covered under the 2nd ammendment, suppressor too.
