The ATF cashed my check a few weeks ago, and a friend asked me a question and I realized I can't really answer it.  If by some chance you're not approved, do you get your money back?  In other words, is it safe to assume that if they cash your check or MO, you'll get a stamp even if it take a correction or two?  I would assume, since you're actually buying the stamp itself, that if you get disapproved, you'll get your check back.

If dissaproved for failing the background check, or for not returning the corrections in time you will receieve a refund.

Yes, you'll get a refund. There's nothing done before check is cashed. Hopefully error corrections would handle any problems, but there's obviously a chance something causes someone to fail the background check.

Additionally, if you're approved and decide you don't want it, you can cancel it before the transfer takes place and get your $200 back. (Whether the dealer would refund the purchase itself is a different issue...same thing on an F1 if you end up not making there firearm).

Rather than start a new thread, I'll post my next question here.   The ATF cashed my check on 10/11.  Today, just for giggles I called to check on it.  She told me it's not in the system yet...   I double checked my serial number.  Hell I quadruple checked it, and I gave her the same one I put on the form 1.  Is it normal for them to take that long to even look at it?

That's a bit longer than normal, by a month or so. However, there are occasionally forms that take forever to get in the system but end up being approved in a normal timeframe. I'd call back in 2-3 weeks and check again.

If it's still not there, I'd email a copy of the form to Ted Clutter and see if he can check using something other than SN, in case there was a typo on their end.

Sometimes they do take a long time. However I submitted a Form 1 about 8 months ago, and after 4 months of not being in the system I was told to talk to a different guy at the ATF. He did some searching and determined that my serial number had been incorrectly entered into the system, thankfully I had e-filed a week earlier and I just cancelled my paper form 1. My e-file was approved in 17 days and it was happily ever after. It did take several months before I saw my refund check.

If you mailed it to the wrong place that will add a few weeks to the processing time.

The initial checks and forms go to the Atlanta office, where they are security scanned, x-rayed for bombs, and then microwaved for Anthrax powder (no, not joking).

If you send it to the Martinsburg WV address instead, it'll get security scanned, microwaved, then sent down to Atlanta where it gets security scanned, microwaved, the checks get pulled out and cashed by the Treasury Dept. and then the forms go up to Martinsburg.

Right way, wrong way, .gov's way.

I sent it to Martinsburg.  I thought that's where form 1s were supposed to be sent.  Anybody got the email of the guy who can check for a typo?
