Greetings... long time lurker here.  I have to thank everyone that contributes to make this place such a tremendous resource for all of us.

I have always found answers through searches... These two I can't find

Slowly assembling my first SBR - I have a question on Engraving the 'caliber' on a lower -  some say it's not necessary, but I just want to make sure there will never be a reason to question the legality of the gun.  The hand guard (tube) effectively covers all printing on the barrel, So my plan is to add it to the lower.  What should I add?

  • 300BLK

  • 30 cal

  • 762x35

  • Or would all of these work?

    Second question -

My lower (Royal Arms) has a full-auto selector position, but will be built as a semi only.  Will that cause any issues with NFA?

    Thanks,

    Don

Specific caliber is not necessary.  My lowers say "Multi Cal." on it as they could be used for 5.56, .223, 300blk etc...

    That's incorrect.

The firearm must be marked with the proper caliber during the initial making. If it doesn't match after the fact because you swapped upper, it doesn't matter. The ATF made that abundantly clear in 2013.

    ATF Ruling 2013-3

    5. If the caliber or gauge was not identified or designated (e.g., marked “multi”) on the firearm, the manufacturer, importer, or maker must legibly and conspicuously mark the frame, receiver, barrel, or pistol slide (if applicable) with the actual caliber/gauge once the caliber or gauge is known.

The reason most builds are ok with "multi" lowers is because a majority of barrels are marked where you can read the caliber when assembled. I have one built where the lower is marked Multi and no markings visible on the barrel. I discretely marked it between the pivot pin ears:

OP...300BLK is how my Noveske barrel is marked.

You're "full auto" question is just about how the lower is marked? That makes no difference. It's the functionality that matters. I have two marked like this, and they don't cause any problems.

Thanks Big - yes my lower is only marked Semi/Full-Auto... PEW PEW PEW was not an option, but I like it!

You marked yours 300BLK, does the engraving have to match what is entered on the form?  Or does it just need to have the same meaning.
Would either of the other two be OK?

I'm leaning toward 7.62x35 ... but don't want to screw it up and have to change it afterward..

I don't know the answer to that one, and don't want to give out any incorrect info.

The form shouldn't say Blackout, or 7.62x35. It should simply say 300.

For ^^ that ^^ reason alone, I don't think it would have to match...since the form wants caliber, while some barrels/lowers/firearms are marked with specific cartridge..but that's just an opinion.

    Perfect!

What's your source? -or- how did you find it  I had no luck searching the ATF website

Source for what? That screen shot above with caliber?

If so...it's an EForms bulletin from 9/17/13. You can find a copy here. Rules should be the same whether you file electronically or paper...although there does seem to be more leniency on paper forms.

Thanks again.  Looks as if, for the engraving - I can use either 300BLK or 7.62x35 - but it should match what is on the form I submit(300 or 7.62)... just to be safe.

    Great stuff
