I decided I want to sbr another lower for when I build my 300 blk. I curretly have a 6920 that I would like to sbr. However Im not too excited about engraving that lower, just incase I decide to sell it later. I just dont want the value of the rifle to be affected because of that. As an alternative I know I can engrave on the barrel instead, or upper receiver? What is not clear to me are;
1. Do I engrave the barrel or upper receiver of the sbr configuration that will be listed on my form 1, or my existing barrel or upper receiver on my 6920? I would think its for the proposed build on form 1. 2. Do I have to keep engraving on barrels or upper receivers for other sbr uppers I decide to build for it or just the original barrel and upper receiver that was listed on the form 1? 3. What info would I need to engrave, same as lower? Trust name city and state or will I need to add serial number etc? If so what additional info would I need? 4. Can you engrave on the upper receiver for the requirement? Ready, set.... Go! |

I would think its for the proposed build on form 1. I would recommend the upper receiver. The barrel on most SBRs is so short that it requires engraving on the section of the barrel under the handguards. By ATF marking requirements, the engraving must be visible, so the upper receiver is the most logical choice. 2. Do I have to keep engraving on barrels or upper receivers for other sbr uppers I decide to build for it or just the original barrel and upper receiver that was listed on the form 1? Yes, you do. 3. What info would I need to engrave, same as lower? Trust name city and state or will I need to add serial number etc? If so what additional info would I need? Trust name, city and state, is all that's needed I think. 4. Can you engrave on the upper receiver for the requirement? Yep. Ready, set.... Go! I don't recommend engraving on anything, but the actual legally recognized firearm itself which is the lower. I also don't agree with your reasoning behind wanting to forgo engraving the lower. For one its highly unlikely you will ever be able to re-sell your NFA lower. Most people that get AR15 SBRs do form 1s on existing builds. A $200-300 NFA lower that's used is a pain to re-sell for a small niche market. However, you could petition the ATF to remove the lower from the registry which you can then sell as a title 1 firearm, but IMHO you just wasted $200. Also, your going to have to go through the time and expense of engraving every NFA upper. Also keep in mind that only the lower is the actual firearm, so if needed you can sell off everything else and keep the cheap stripped lower (who sells used stripped lowers anyway) and if you want to build an SBR again you already have a registered lower. |

Thanks. I do want to clarify, what I was wanting to do was be able to take the sbr upper off later and return my 6920 back to original with just adding the original upper back to it. Then take the lower off of the registry before selling. I understand what losses I will have by going that route. But I want to have the option... Since the lower was never engraved and taken off of the registry then the value wont be affected and I would be in a niche market... Am I making sense here... Dont get me wrong I see exactly where you are coming from, but we may not be on the same page... Hence why I didnt want to engrave the lower, this way the rifle will be as it was originally. I would just have notify the atf to remove it from the registry and sell it as a title 1 firearm... |

I understand your point. I think as long as you don't buy more than one SBR upper your shouldn't take too bad of a hit if you decide to sell everything. I would at least try to sell it as a complete SBR NFA set before you remove it from the registry and try to sell it title I. |
