Hello, I have been interested in a SBR complete upper but I don't have the paper work for it (hope doing it soon). I'm interested in a 10.5" barrel.  My question is: Am I able to buy the SBR upper and use it as a pistol ( while I do the paper work later) but for a while can I use it as a pistol?   What should I been doing for use it as a pistol, just removing the stock or is there anything else I should do to not break any law? Please lead me on this. Never have had a SBR before. Thanks

As far as i am aware, that will constitue a pistol when placed upon a stockless lower receiver. (Federally/State)

I beleive it will still need to be registered as a pistol in your state. (State)

Best case scenario is to call a local and trusted NFA gun shop in your state and ask.

I wouldn't mess around without calling someone in the know, you surely don't need a stupid felony charge.

This has already been clarified by ATF.

You only need a receiver that has never been built into a rifle.
~No special markings needed.
~No need to have the manufacturer mark it or log it as anything special.
~No need to have the FFL transfer it to you as a pistol.

This.

And to answer one of the ops questions. I would invest in a pistol receiver extension and not just use the collapsible stock receiver extension. This could land you in trouble. I'm not saying it would, but its better safe than sorry.

Get a pistol buffer tube. This one worked well for me.

ok, so theres no difference in the receiver for pistol, the only difference is not having the stock and adding the pistol buffer tube right?  thanks for the link

There is no difference, other than that it is originally assembled into a complete firearm in pistol configuration.

OP,

If it has a stock, and started out life as a rifle, you cannot use that lower for a pistol.  You need a lower that has never been a rifle.  Lowers are cheap.  Build a pistol from a stripped lower and you will be Golden.

Got another question. How is the recoil in a 10.5"?   Much more than a 14.5"?

Ball of fire bigger, noise louder, no difference in felt recoil.

Ok I'm about to buy the 10.5" but before proceed with the purchase I have 1 more thing that I still thinking.   My question is If I can purchase the upper without any problem like any other normal upper and also shipped just normal to my house with no problems at all?     thanks

Yes, they're just gun parts. The same exact thing if it was a 16" AR upper or a glock bbl.

Yes, you can get an upper shipped to your house no problem.
Though legally you probably don't want to have the complete upper and lower receiver in your possession before receiving the stamp.

You mean like not having it installed  onto a lower right?

has anyone experienced with a 7.5"? what max distance of accuracy am I expecting with a 7.5"?

Length of barrel, all by itself does not equal accuracy or lack of accuracy.
Accuracy is a function of the barrel quality. Velocity is directly affected
by barrel length. Effective range is affected by velocity...

My 10.3" 5.56mm upper is effective out to 350 yards with a reflex optic on it.
I have no idea about a 7.5" kitty-kat but imagine it would be good-to-go out to
around 250-300 easy. Will it have big-game knock down at those ranges? ...

The 7.5" sure is a hoot to shoot though (I don't own one yet, but have had
fun on the range with other peoples kitty-kats :)
