Quoted: Quoted: ^If I was putting together another 5.56 upper, I would keep the FSB and use one of those rails. Whats the advantage of that???? The advantage of keeping the FSB is that you know you have a solid front sight. The advantage of using the Centurion rail with the cutout is that you still get to keep your FSB and get the extended rails on the sides and bottom. More "rail estate"...

Some question to consider
Are you using standard front sight or low profile gas block? Gas piston or DI? Quick detach flash hider/muzzle brake for suppressor? I originally was using a low profile gas block and yhm diamond specter length (9.75") on 10.5 upper. I converted from di to opsprey piston so yhm had to go. I ordered a samson evo 10" but had to cancel order because piston would not work under it and the 51t brake i am putting on it would have interferred with future surppressor mounting since it would be just under the edge of a 10" rail. I ended up with MI free float quad rail in mid length (9") that is designed to work with piston systems. |

I have run YHM Specter, Troy TRX 9, and a modified version of the Daniel Defense MFR on my primary 10.5" upper.
I really liked the TRX 9 but it showed too much barrel past the gas block (a chopped FSB). Someday I'll try the MI 10" tubular FF just to see how it works with a YHM 762 QD mount and whether or not it'll clear enough to have the can mounted. |

I'm using a YHM Customizable FF Specter length forend on my AR45's 10.5" upper. No gas block is necessary on it so I just have a aet of YHM BUIS's mounted to the flat top and also to a length of rail attached to the top of the FF tube. With the Specter length forend, all that protrudes from the forend is the flash hider.
I reLly don't like fully railed forends. Most of the rails aren't used so you just end up covering them up. With the YHM customizable forends, you have a comfortable tube to hold on to and you can attach rails wherever you need them. I have YHM customizable forends in either carbine or specter lengths on all three of my SBR uppers. I like them a lot better than the Knights Armament FF Rail Forend on my non-NFA AR but I traded into it right so I'm using it. Just another option. |

I am personally a big fan of the ultra-light-weight "tube" style handguards that have a full rail on top and 3 very short rails on the bottom and sides. No sense paying the weight cost on a full quad rail when you're never going to use the whole side rails. The new MI SS Gen2 rails are slick as hell, very light, and not too expensive, so you might look in that direction.
I'd go with a low-pro gas block if possible and run the rail straight over it; I believe this would be a 9" rail on a carbine gas system. Polymer BUIS don't like to be run on a gas block, and you avoid that problem by putting them on the handguard. |
