Anyone here run a pistol length barrel for the 300 blkout on their sbr?  How well does it function/cycle?  If given the option, would you purchase a pistol barrel or get a 16 in carbine and have it chopped to say 10.5?

Don't have one, but from the research I have done they function fine. My build I'm working on now is a .300 blkout with a 8" bbl and pistol length gas system.

Where r u getting your bbl from?  Only pistol bbl ive found is 400+ from AAC

9inch AAC upper. Runs fine

Anything less than 14.5" needs pistol gas length in 300 BLK.  Chopping a carbine length gas system on 300 BLK below that level will not function as the gas tube isn't large enough to let enough gas through no matter the size of the gas port.

If Noveske makes their short barrels with pistol gas you can probably trust that it will be a reliable gas length.

I've got an 8" Noveske barrel.  It runs fine with everything except unsuppressed subsonics, but that is by design.  Noveske intentionally went with a slightly smaller port size to improve suppressed function.  It's not a real problem because there is no practical purpose to shooting subsonics unsuppressed, and if you really had a hard-on to do so, you could still get it to work fine with a light buffer and/or spring.

You can buy a barrel as short as 6.5" from Delta Company, though you'll have to wait 2-4 months to get anything from them right now.  They are very high quality barrels for much less than AAC or Noveske.

I'm running the 8" Noveske as well.  It seems to prefer stout supersonic loadings, but I run an H2 buffer.  Subsonics nearly cycle unsuppressed (spent case ejects, but doesn't cycle far enough to strip next round), but I suspect with a lighter buffer they would.  They will be much more fun once I can liberate the SDN-6 from my dealer's safe.

8" Noveske.  Runs perfect with supers and subs, with and without a can.  Although mine cycles sub sonics without the can, there is really no reason to.

10.3" Delta Co upper with pistol gas system and PRI adjustable gas block.  Spikes heavy buffer.  No cycling problems as long as the load gives enough gas (a real light load with a faster burning powder won't give enough gas no matter what the gas setting).

Im gonna have a lookie at the delta barrels too but i really like the 8 nov.  Thx for the info guys

I had CMMG cut a 9" 300 BLK barrel for a build with a pistol length gas system. It came with a .089 gas port. In testing we found the gas port needs to be .110 to run high velocity and subs reliably.
I tested the upper with high velocity 147 gr., sub sonic 175 gr., supressed and unsuppressed.
All cycled reliably with the exception of some hand loads that were very quiet but very weak. They just fell out of the ejection port. I had two fail to reset the hammer.
I was running an H2 buffer/carbine spring.

No signs of over gas judging the brass.
I'm real happy with it.

I went with a Noveske 10.5" 300 Fireball barrel.  Gas port is a little larger so it will cycle subs and supers whether suppressed or not.

I have an 11.3" Wilson Combat 300blk, with pistol length tube.  As others have posted, its the way to go.

Works fine with supersonic and subsonic.

I've got a pistol-length barrel on my .300 Whisper SBR.  It functions perfectly.

(you never did specify what platform you are looking at.  )

And generally, you want to start with the barrel-length you intend to use.  If you start with a longer one and cut it back, you are paying for more barrel than you really need, plus the additional cost of cutting & threading.  If you wanted to run an AR15, the gas port would likely need to be opened up when shortening the barrel.

That is a bad ass little set up.
