So, I have always run iron sights on my SBRs.  I picked up the new Aimpoint Patrol Rifle Optic and ordered a flattop 10.5 inch upper with quad rails.  How did you decide where to mount your optics.  I have seen them mounted where you would mount a scope and I have seen them mounted toward the muzzle almost at the end of the lower.  The rail system gives me total flexibility but I not sure how to take full advantage of it.

UPS says my upper is out for delivery so I should see it tonight.  Gas-buster charging handle, Flip up Magpul backup sights and I will be ready to play with the PRO.

Any and all help appreciated!

I put them all at the front of the receiver for reasons of focus and balance that may not be your preference.

OK, I understand the balance thing, but not the focus.  Can you elaborate?

Too close and its distracting. Even with both eyes open you want it a short distance away, and you want to be able to focus on the dot, as that is the proper way to shoot a red dot optic.

The brown truck comith.  I will take your advise and start with it at the end of the lower.

Thanks for your input.

OK guys.  With your input and after some research, it looks like I'm going to mount the PRO with the front of the mount lined up with the rail end at the front of the upper.

I hope I didn't make a big deal out of nothing.

I hope the sights cowittness.

Let me know if anyone has anything more to add.

Hope it does not rain Friday.

Now I'm already thinking about my next project.

It's good to ask, it means you're taking it seriously.

Ignore people who tell you to focus on the target. The bullet goes where the dot is, not where your eye points so watch the dot.

Feel free to move it around and find what's best for you.

It's a semi custom build, but I was surprised that the magpul backup sights, that I ordered separately,  were already installed.  Since I like to build from scratch I would take them off and re-due them, but it looks like they are blue loctited in place.

I am using a registered lower that has a 11.5 upper on it, so it will not take long to get it in it's initial configuration.  Pics to follow although it's nothing special compared to what we have seen posted here.

I have always built "cheap"  meaning something other than the best.  I'm getting to the point that I want to built less guns but build them right.

I watched C-SPAN this morning and bad things are coming.  I'm going to register a couple more lowers and try and get them build before the radar points at NFA.

i would put it any spot on your receiver that allow you the fastest target acquisition. for most people, that's far forward.

if the optic has magnification or none-infinite eye relief, you should give a try at various position to achieve best sight picture and full range of field of view. (as well as speed and comfort of your head position)..

in other words.. simply.. put it where it works for you.

You should mount the sight in such a place where it looks the coolest
