Not going to work, since if you looking for a distance to set the sizer against the shell plate, your doomed from the start since some may have already shimmed there drive hub (as well as there sub plates to the ram), and this will take out some of the play that you have now with your hub and shell plate instead.

So bottom line, break out your case gauge (buy one if needed), since your going to need it to set the sizer correctly for full lenght sizing.

Also as a side note, since Hornady makes their dies for both progressive reloaders, and even single stage machine, with a progress press, some time you need to face the bottom of the sizer by .010" off,  so it's not crashing too hard into the shell plate to cause some binding problems back at the drive hub (it already just waiting to shear off the top section, so no reason to help that along instead).

this isn't for reloading,I have a set of gauges and let's say go is 1.630 and nogo is 1.634 and my measurement is 1.626 and 1.630. I just want to know if my hs gauges are on.

yeah it did thank you. my barrel is marked 308,this is a gas gun. so let's say it's more along the lines of a nato spec chamber would it be safe to reload comm brass in it? I'm worried about it growing too much. Do you think since it's a gas gun they made the chamber like this so it will accept both cartridges. It is ok to fire 7.62x51 out of a 308,I used my dpms marked as 7.62x51 as a control and it passed the test.

I checked the I.D. of my comparator and it is .400,does this mean my gauges are short? both perfectly short by .004?

Forget leade for now (what the bullet comparator  is used for) .

What is the chamber head spacing off the chamber shoulders to the bolt face now, hence 7.62 Nato or 308 with the gauge you have now?

Hence if the chamber will allow the bolt to close on a win 308 no-go gauge of 1.634", then chances are the chamber is Nato , since a 7.62 no go gauge is 1.6405" instead.
FYI, if you have a fired/spent win 308 round case from the rifle, you can check it to get an idea of what the head space is as well.

Once you figure out what the chamber is and how far is best to bump the shoulder back on your brass during full sizing, then you can break out a bullet Overall Length Gauge next to figure out the zero jump to lands for any give bullet with the correct full sized case for your chamber, then uses the comparator in the 30cal channel for your bullet Ogive OAL reading, and what you need to back the OAL of the round back at least .003" for a safe OAL loading length so that bullet does not embedding at loading.

Hence if you have a 7.62 Nato chamber, sizing the brass to 308 to use the Bullet Overall Length Gauge with that case, then your jump to lands is going to be slightly greater than what you think it really is isntead.

Here is a 7.62 nato case test gauge if you need one to check your round if you are only bumping the case shoulder back match your chamber during reloading using 308 loading data.
http://www.evergladesammo.com/jp-308-7-62x51-case-guage.html

And again, we are using only win 308 loading data and working up the loads from the min in case of less case volume), so will be safe to leave the brass shoulders a touch longer to match the chamber, instead of sizing to 308 win and over working the cases instead.

thank you for talking me through this. I know it's not 308 according to my gauges that from my measurements are 4thou small,I don't have a field gauge for 308 and I don't have any 7.62x51 gauges. If my gauges "brand new" are really short it would probably put my chamber in spec but I find it hard to believe both are off the same amount and it still would be hard to explain why the barrel marked 7.62x51"stock dpms" passed with my gauges even though the mil spec chamber is supposed to be bigger. I'm not worried about coal right now just trying to figure out if this chamber will keep me and the brass in it for the long haul. I had a crummy weekend for my black rifles, went and tested my m4 with a wc super sniper barrel and it was 1 1/2 moa a far cry from the 1/2 to 1/4 I'm looking for. As for the 308 I'll take it to the lgs and have him gauge it as maybe my gauges are shit, after that I'll send it back.
