We all know by now that buffer face damage is mostly caused by an out-of-spec buffer retainer pin location. I wrote an article about it and the fix. Moderators, if this link breaks any rules, please delete. Tnx!

A link is fine if it meets the Conduct Code.  If you haven't read the Conduct Code, then now is the time.

The link you provided is okay.  Read the CC anyway.

Thanks for posting this.  It may be a common undiagnosed problem, and an easy way to solve it.

Thanks. I hope this can help others as well. I have a couple AR's that had this problem and came up with this idea to fix it. The damage is mostly cosmetic, but I had one that sheared the pin off the base. It didn't do any damage or get caught up in the trigger group, but it could actually happen. I haven't seen any reports of lock-ups because of it. I ran one AR without the buffer retainer for some time and it was fine like that, except you have to remember that there's nothing holding the buffer and spring in place when you pull the pins. Oops, right! Still no big deal, as it won't damage anything unless you have your eyeball in the way. Even the buffer face getting beat up is no big issue, but I didn't want that. The biggest concern was whether a sheared pin would cause problems. Maybe, maybe not. Yes No Yes No. LOL. The price you see on these pins at the end of the article is outrageous for what it is, but that's the result of only having a minimal of these machined. One or thirty was the same price, etc, so I figured I'd sell some to try and recoup some cost.

The fix... Offset pin and recessed shelf to keep from rotating.

Note the buffer is pushed back off the buffer retainer by the bolt carrier. This is how it's 'supposed' to work.

Check out Leitner-Wise. They have a buffer retainer that is even heavier duty than that and it work fantastic.

Didn't somebody make stick on washer or spacer for the back of the BCG also to address this?

Tried looking for it at Brownells but couldn't find it.

Here is a link below, BUT I wouldn't want to use it on an AR that does into harms way.

I ordered one from the OP's blog page to address some damage I had on one of my cheap builds that used a polymer lower (yeah, I'm trying one of those out from back when they were still 1/2 the price of an aluminum lower).

Very easy to install and I think will take care of the issue at hand.  Seems like an easy fix that is easier than hassling with trying to return an otherwise functional lower.
