Is there any safe way of removing a rattle-can paint job from a Remington 870 Express with the rough matte finish and wood stocks without ruining the bluing and finish on the wood?
.....the wood will have to be sanded down and refinished.

I have good luck with TCE from Brownells. It will strip just about anything and will not harm the bluing. The wood I would remove and find something a little less aggressive.

I've had success with a rag soaked in boiled linseed oil on painted wood. (Oil based which I'm assuming your rattle can was)
Lay the rag on the wood for a minute or more and wipe paint off. A paint scraper may be necessary, but you shouldn't have to be too aggressive. A heat gun should also work. Scrape paint as soon as it starts to bubble. |

For most rattle can paints, ordinary lacquer thinner will quickly remove the paint.
I'm not sure what it will do the the Express finish, but since it'll have to be refinished any way, that doesn't matter. Remove the rubber or plastic butt pad to prevent any chance of damage. Take it OUTSIDE away fro pilot lights or sparks, and use the lacquer thinner and a solvent-proof toothbrush to apply the thinner. The paint should almost immediately start to "craze" and come off. It won't harm the wood if it soaks into it, but make sure to allow time for all the solvent to evaporate before taking it inside. |
