I have an Ithaca 37 that is light striking primers about 10% of the time. There is no pattern to the misfires. It does not happen on the first or last shell in the magazine, or any in between more than another. It happens with all brands, shot sizes and loads of shells. The firing pin is in great shape and a couple of thousands longer than another I put on the caliper. The firing pin spring is in good shape. There isn't anything gumming up the firing pin in the bolt.
Any ideas what is going on? |
| Since you've measured your firing pin, I'll guess you check it and the channel for burrs and debris. Next I'd check the hammer and hammer bar for rust, wear, or obstructions. If all is well there, I'd look to the main spring and it's cup for the same issues as above. Might just replace the main spring for good measure. Good luck. |

Depending on the version, check to see if the barrel is fully in place, or to see if the barrel is properly fitted.
Older Ithaca guns required that the barrel be individually fitted to the receiver. If the barrel is not properly seated or fitted, you could have excess head space, which can cause mis-fires. It's not unheard of for people to just pick up a barrel and install it, not knowing or caring that it needed to be fitted. Also as above, check the mainspring, and give the action a good, deep cleaning. Debris and gunk floating around in the action can cause odd problems. And, worse come to worse, Ithaca is still in business and apparently services older guns. |
