Question for you guys. I just got a Seekins picatinny rail base to put on my Rem 700 SA. I also bought the Vortex (Seekins) precision rings. Going to be mounting a SWFA SS 5-20x50 scope.

For bedding the base. I watched a video on you tube where the receiver was waxed, the bottom of the base ground to make a rough surface, and then the epoxy applied and the screws very slightly tightened to hold the base in place. So 3 questions.
1. Does the bottom of the base really need ground rough for the epoxy
2. The Seekins base has a recoil lug. Should I also epoxy bed this to fit the receiver? Should I do it in the same or a separate step from the other bedding?
3. What should I use for a release wax. I have car wax, pure parafin, and some case lube. I was considering the case lube.

For the rings, since I bought the precision rings and base from the same manufacture, is there really a need to lap them? I almost feel like I'm more likely to screw up a good design then not.

No expert here, but I'm in a similar spot...bout to bed/install a Farrell base & TPS rings on a Savage Model 10 FCP later today.

1. From what I've read, you just need to roughen the surface of the base, so the epoxy has something to adhere to. You don't want to change any angles or dimensions. I'm just using some 150 grit sandpaper.

2. I honestly have no idea, but I'd think it would be unnecessary to bed the recoil lug. Chances are the Seekins base will be a nice fit to begin with.

3. I'm using neutral Kiwi shoe polish. Gonna apply one coat and "buff" it, then apply a second coat. I'm using Play Doh to plug the screw holes in the receiver (after reading an online tutorial where this was used).

As for the rings, my research indicates that lapping them shouldn't be necessary with quality rings and a one piece base. I don't intend to lap mine unless something's obviously off. Bedding the base should mean it's nice and straight, with no possible "binding" from one end of the receiver to the other.

Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable will be along shortly to either confirm my advice or tell me I'm way out of my lane.

I have a Seekins base comming for Rem. 700. I've watched the video and wonder how you get the play-do out of the action screw holes. Also the video failed to advise to put releasing agent inside the mount screw holes. Any threads on this site on proper base bedding procedures. Thanks.

Jhat, I used a cleaning patch around a small punch with some acetone to get the Play doh out of the screw holes in the receiver. I used Q tips soaked in acetone to get the JB Weld out of the mount holes (the concave part that the screw heads rest against when tightened). For the actual holes in the mount, I just used a drill bit (twisted by hand) to drill the holes out while the JB Weld was still workable.
