I have been meaning to buy a Nagant revolver and thread it ever since they hit the surplus market. I ordered a few the other day and got to spend some quality time with it on the South Bend last night.
I always mean to take more pictures, but then I get caught up in the work and keep working, so sorry there arent more pictures of the different stages.
The barrel is threaded into the frame, however, unlike most Russian guns this one came apart fairly easy. its a RH thread and probably took less than 50 ft/lbs to break it loose. (sorry, no pics)
I set up the lathe to turn between centers and started with the relief cut. I was able to get about 0.320" length and still leave enough meat on the front sight base for the sight. Its an interrupted cut, so slow and steady was the name of the game to keep from killing the tool.
then i had to nibble away the front part of the sight base and turn the OD to the major diameter. (0.495 in my case for a 1/2-28 thread) got carried away and forgot pics
then I set up for threading and again forgot to take any pics until I was done. here is the finished product.
last part was to mill the front sight post back and then put everything back together. (I forgot pics again...) here is the pistol after assembly, I touched up the bluing afterward and everything looks great now. just need to make a stubby little thread protector, but I'm going to wait till after I thread the other two Nagant's before i tear down the setup I've got.
I touched up the bluing and thought I'd snap another pic.
I'm pretty excited to shoot it, but I've got to get some ammo first.
