What do you consider to be "cheap"?

Usually the affordable ones are junk.  If you're going to use your ounch set more than one time, spend the money on a nice set.

I gave $40 shipped for this Starrett set and I've been VERY happy with it:

One way to get good punches cheap is to buy them at Sears.
You can buy only those you need right away, and since they're Craftsman, damage one and they give you a new one.

When you're ready for good gunsmith punches, buy them from Brownell's.

I got a punch set from walmart. They're holding up really well.

They have greatly surpassed the punches of u got from Harbor Freight (I went through 2 sets)

Punches are one of the items you almost have to spend money on for quality.  I have broken and mushroom even the made in USA Sears ones.  Go with some higher end punches.

A good set from starrett will last forever as long as you dont use them to pry with, or use them for things like drift pins... Spend the money and buy once, cry once...

Looking to do my first of 4 AR builds from kits and stripped lowers.  I've looked thru manuals, but can't find sizes of all roll pins in the build.  I'd like to buy quality Starrett punches and roll pin starters but full sets are $$$.  Looking for info on which few essential sizes I can buy NOW and then re-evaluate punch needs again for later builds.  I am using kits from M&A Parts and Essential arms lowers.  Thanks.  PS: New guy---My first post .

OP,
When it comes to tools, I've found that "cheap" and "good" are not mutually inclusive terms. Like others noted, buy once, cry once.

the starret pin punch set from brownells has almost every size you will ever need and cost less then $65. Three boxes of .223 will cost you more then that...
