I was wondering if typeIII anodizing 6061T6 aluminum increases it's strength? Or does it just add wear resistance? Would using duracoat on the aluminum be just as good?

Thanks

Anodize is just a coating, adds no strength to the aluminum

It increases surface hardness but not strength. If there are other parts working on the aluminum then no, generally Duracoat is not just as good. If, however, all you want is something to cover the bare aluminum then Duracoat will probably be ok. Duracoat is nothing more than paint where as anodizing is part of the metal.

Anodizing is an oxidation process in which the aluminum oxide is formed on the surface of the AL, a few thousandths thick.   Aluminum oxide is very hard and provides wear resistance.

Cerakote is tougher and more durable than Durakote. If you have a benchmade knife with the black blade, for instane, that is cerakote. They've also got some neato stuff they're trying to add to their line for better tacticoolness.

I used to work aat a place that made a ton of Benchmade product and eventuallt coated all their baldes, etc. that they wanted done.
