I started to have a problem with my 1100 after I installed a Daves Metal Works Easy Loader (besides the bolt not staying open) which got progressively worse and thought it was the loaders fault.
I purchased and installed a Remington competition carrier and am still having the problem which is - I cannot load a shell in the magazine from time to time. Cycling the action by hand will allow me to load a shells again. After investigating I found this to be the issue, from time to time, the disconnector is not letting the interceptor latch go up and won't allow me to load a shell in the magazine tube. When I cycle the action, the disconnector goes up and so does the interceptor latch. Has anyone had this problem? Ideas? I ordered a set of springs from Midway including the interceptor latch spring and sear spring and will install them. The gun is an 80's model, I've put lots of rounds through it so it can't hurt, but may not the root cause. I'll also polish the side of the disconnector that rides along the receiver wall and check it for burrs and rough spots and lubricate. |

Thinking I figured it out. I'm no expert in the operation of an 1100, but after observing it's workings for a while I've come up with a proposed root cause solution. BLUF is that The ezloader didn't lock the bolt back and I didn't understand the workings of the 1100.
A little background. You cannot load a Remington 1100 magazine with the bolt forward and hammer down. The hammer must be cocked and bolt forward . There is an interceptor that is timed to move into place in front of the magazine and block shells from shooting out. It only lets one at a time onto the carrier. If the hammer is down on the firing pin this interceptor is in place and won't let shells out, OR in. Failure scenario What was happening to me was the EZ loader was not locking the bolt back. I was pulling the trigger, realizing that the chamber was empty then trying to load the magazine with the bolt forward and hammer down. The interceptor was in the way and the increased thickness of the EZ loader made the jam even tighter. This is one reason people cut 1/2" off the ezloader. If I had followed proper tactical protocol, I would have pulled the bolt when I realized the gun was empty, put one in the chamber then loaded the magazine. I used to do this when the bolt locked back with the factory parts. This new scenario was unknown and unpracticed. I was trying to load the magazine then charge the chamber. I'm tired of working on the DMW easy loader so I bought and installed the factory competition carrier. It's not quite as slick as the EZ loader but it will work (a big benefit), hold the bolt back and is 100 times better than the standard carrier. |
