My good friend's father in law presented me with an old revolver he found while cleaning out his late father in law's (who was a complete bad a$$ that was in WWII, an engineer, and was a post depression pack rat = cool stuff) estate. This revolver is currently not functioning and knowing that I've built AR's and liked to tinker - he gave it to me to take a look at or find a smith. I'd like to clean it up a bit before I start taking it apart and I was planning on giving it a bath in the anti-carbon cleaning mixture I found listed here. Odorless mineral spirits and CLP.

MY QUESTION: the gun is chromed, will an overnight bath in the mixture (the mineral spirits) have any adverse affect on this finish? That question immediately popped into my mind and I wanted to be sure first. Thanks.

IMO the solution will not affect the finish.  I am no expert, but have soaked many a thing in MS and or CLP with no adverse effects.

Cool, thanks. I'm sure this is probably a dumb question, but better safe than sorry - especially with other peoples belongings.

Wait for someone who know more than I . . . .

Are you certain that it's chrome and not nickel plated? AFAIK, mineral spirits won't hurt either one. Cleaning solvents that contain ammonia will attack nickel plating though.

What brand/type of revolver is it?

If you are nervous about the nickle you can always give it a soak in ATF. Wont hurt the nickle and it has a very strong detergent action.
