How do you find the size thread (metric) that has been tapped into a drilled hole? Buy assortment of of metric thread bolts and try till one fits?
Thanks,

Its much simpler than that.
Simply go to most auto stores, hardware stores, or machine shop supply houses and buy a metric screw thread gage.
This is a gage with threaded holes and studs that are labeled as to what thread they are.

Here's a good set.  One side of the ball has a threaded stud that gages a hole, the hole in the ball gages the screw itself.

Many hardware stores have gages chained to the wall in the screw department for customers to use.
Unless its a receiver or too big, just take the part to a good hardware store that spells metric screws and they'll gage it for you.

Calipers and math will narrow it down to one or two possible screws, assuming it isn't an oddball. Metric stuff has standard TPI counts like SAE stuff does.

This right here, for inside threads, for out side threads the wires are your friends,as always.

Thread wires and mic should provide a pretty damn good idea too.

Not going to have much luck with thread wires on an inside thread.
