Has anyone tried it?  Any reason why it wouldn't work? If anyone has done it, would love to see some pictures.

But if you did that you'd lose the ability to lock it in the folding position!

BTW - I emailed Kel Tec about a year ago asking if they would come up with short-barrel-with-permanent-muzzle-device config.  They said no.

I searched over on KTOG and couldn't find one... I did find a nifty SUB project, however, where a guy integrally suppressed his 9mm SUB (but the bbl + perma-can length was still >16", so not an SBR)/

What would be the point?

The whole folding action was specifically designed to get around the '94-'04 AWB on folding stocks, and to make something that was compact like an SBR, but still be a Title I weapon.

I tend to agree –– but the SU-16 series was designed with a similar intent, and I know I have seen those SBR'd.

It would be an interesting project but not worth it. I think the Kel tec is good for what it is. It is a good foldable 9mm rifle. Durabiltiy and ergonomics are not that great. I have already broken and repaired the front sight on mine. I would hate to put more money into it than it is worth.  You will need to spend at least $200 for the SBR tax. Folding it in half does make it quite small and is a good trade off compared to an SBR.

That said, I would submit another part of the equation to you: Usage vs. Storage.

I have also asked at other forums about making a Sub2k SBR.  I think it could be a worthwhile endeavor.  The fact is that when I talk about an SBR, I'm not talking about wanting it to be small for better storage, I want it to be small to be more usable.

Think about it: At what range does a PCC shine?  CQB - inside houses.  What do many people buy PCCs for?  Home defense.  That's why I have mine.  A pistol bullet gains very very little from extra barrel length, but a long gun becomes FAR more usable inside a house when the barrel is cut down.  There is a big difference in going through a doorway with a 30" long gun and going through with a 22" long gun.

It certainly would make it such that you couldn't fold it all the way, but so does adding a scope or red dot and many people are doing that.  Additionally, many people also make mounts that flip the scope off to the side so that the weapon can collapse all the way.  If you used some type of folding BUIS as the front sight, then you might not be able to get the weapon to lock in the folded position, but you could get it almost all the way down.

Now the one argument I can see is the notion that SBRing a $300 gun isn't worth it.  I might give you that one.  Hence why Glock NEEDS to make a Cx4 Storm-like PCC with a folding stock that can be SBRed.

I am not sure if converting to an SBR would add much utility for what I am using the kel-tec for. I use it for indoor protection. I have a green laser and flash light mounted on mine. In distances under 15 yds,  (which includes most of my house)  I dont even need to aim using  the sights. I just click on the light if needed,  then  look for  the green dot and pull the trigger. It is easier to shoot  than my glock 19. It is also still foldable and portable with the light and laser installed so I can take it with me if needed for traveling.

If you need a small SBR glock like gun you might look into the EMA Roni.

That's a product pic from Gemtech.  It's on their SMG Suppressor page.

Yeah, I'm aware of the suppressed projects from over on KTOG. It's SBR with the can off, but with it on, it's still the same size.

Another possible reason for it would be that in the state of PA you can not have a loaded rifle in a vehicle...but a loaded SBR is OK since it falls through a loophole in the wording. I could see this as a useful vehicle gun it you SBRed it and it could still fold. A nice compact PCC that you could hit things at greater distances with.

Why not just use the PLR-16 for an sbr then?

Sure, you could go that route too...I was just thinking that a Sub 2000 would take the same mags as a pistol, none of the concussion of an SBR AR (I have an 11.5 AR and would never want to shoot it without plugs!) plus it is already set up with a stock in a nice little folding package. Oh, and I could run my 9mm can on it since my .223 is still pending

I handled a Glock "shell" at the NRA show last year that adds an adj. stock, optic rails, VFG/light rails, etc. to a standard Glock pistol and I decided then and there that I was going to SBR one of my G17s and add that stock. Still plan to, as soon as my family NFA trust is ready.

ETA:  I think the one I handled was THIS one.
