I just got back from shooting my new (to me) CX4 and noticed that the brass was blackened and filthy.  Is this normal for how the gun functions, or is this something I should be concerned about?

Thanks!

Yes my CX4 9mm brass looks the same corbon I guess.

That looks like 45 cal black powder cartridges or something.  My 9 MM doesn't do that.  It gets a LITTLE of the carbon on the magazine, but the spent brass is clean.

I might suggest switching out ammo brands to see if anything changes.

LOL.  I thought it looked a bit much.  The ammo is Winchester White Box.  You can see a fair amount of residue on the magazine as well.  So its common to get a fair amount of crud back in the chamber?  I've fired plenty of this ammo out of my 92FS and never seen anything like this.

I have seen better and seen worse. I have, or have owned a few 9mm carbines. They are blow back and will get a fair amount of crud on the brass especially with certain ammo (powders like Unique). I had a High Point 9mm (They are a true value), and currently have a 9mm Storm, a Marlin 9 Camp, and a RRA 9mm AR. They all get a bit dirty.

Rifles like an AR or AK that fire from a locked shut bolt are much cleaner. In a blow back gun the casing and bolt start to move back before the bullet is out the end of the barrel. This leaks a good bit of "blow back" around the casing. Its why my RRA 9mm, and others,  have a gas deflector by the ejection port to keep this stuff out of your face. I also have a .380 pistol that does the same thing, its blow back also. Its just the "nature of the beast".
