Hello all, picked up this project today....Gun is a Marlin 336 30-30 100 year anniversary edition. Appears to be made in 1969.

It has pretty heavy pitting all over the exterior finish (previous owner sandblasted it) The bore, receiver, and bolt look nearly perfect. The wood was tossed so I will need to buy a new set and the loading door screw was missing but other than that it appears complete.

I paid the guy $50 for the gun...I think i'll come out ahead on this if I can find a good deal on some used wood and staying cheap with a cold blue job.

Anything I should look for on this? and anybody have any experience restoring lever guns?

Funny thing is the guy was asking $30 for it but I felt like I was stealing it so I gave him $50

32 bucks for the forearm and 80 bucks for the rear stock is about the cheapest I've seen in stock.

Used wood is usually not hard to find. Check Gunbroker and Ebay. Even nice replacement wood is not too expensive.

Still, used factory stocks can be amazingly nice under the factory finish, and will be the cheapest route.

I try to stay away from cold blue. It is not durable, does not protect against rust well, and I have never been able to get it too look really good on a large area.

If you are trying to do something you can do easily at home, try Birchwood Casey Plum Brown. You can get really good results with a deep colour and good protection against rust. I also really like the look of browning. If you do it right, you can give the receiver, lever, and hammer the look of old case hardening with the browning.

Check the inside of the mag tube to make sure it is not rusted. Replace the follower with a SS follower if you want to make sure it does not rust in the future, or keep the blued one, but don't by a plastic one. Get a couple loading gate screws, and a couple of any others you need. The current factory Marlin screws tend to chip, the heads break in half, or the threads are not cut right. you will want spares, in case.

If you want a really nice sight that is inexpensive, the Marbles Bullseye sight works well, and looks right on a levergun. Otherwise, you may want to put a bit more money into a receiver sight.

Get a Wolff Magazine spring - they only cost a few dollars.

Other than that, you should be good- get it put together and see how it feels. You can't help but come out ahead on this one.

See the thread below on the custom 336 we just did to see what can be done with some of the old factory wood.

Wild West Guns sometimes has stock sets that they take off of rifles they replace their synthetic stocks with.

I've done two projects like that, lots of fun.  Good luck with yours!

Look into rust bluing it its not that hard to do. I used Mark Lee express rust blue came out great on a Sarco Colt 1911.

I'd just parkerize it and go with some take off stocks. Would make a great truck gun.

Don't cold blue.  KG gunkote or similar is much better.  KG makes an HK Black that is kinda semi gloss that would look really nice on that gun.

Also, if it were me, I'd get some take off stocks (Numrich) and sand out any big dings and hydro dip.

Here is a set I had done...
