Hi,
I've got a Marlin Model 1984 Cowboy Limited in .357.

Click, but no bang. Primer untouched. I'm no smith, but I thought I would ask and see if there are any well-known problems I could look for. Finding a repair facility here in Vermont might be a challenge.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Is the safety off?

Broken firing pin most likely.  I've seen a Marlin 33 in 35 Remington have the exact same problem, the tip of the firing pin was broken right off.  Any competant smith around you should be able to replace it quick if that's the problem.  Two screws and 2 roll pins later the firing pin comes right out.

Is it clean?  Gunk can slow/limit the firing pin movement.  If it's a busted pin, Marlins are easy to take down, heck, you should be removing the bolt to clean from the chamber end anyway.  If you don't feel confident, call Remington, they can fix it.

I just bought a used (pre cross bolt safety) 1894 in .44 mag, I had the same problem. I did a quick field strip, removed the bolt assembly and then soaked it in a cup of lighter fluid for a couple of hours. Took it out, blowed it dry with compressed air and let it sit overnight. I then oiled it up good, reassembled and off to the range. I fired about 25 rounds with no problems. Give it a try and let us know.

Here is the simple flush methed buy some non chlorinated break cleaner. Then remove the wood flush everything startng with barrel and mag tube then action and bolt until it sprays clean then relube and test again this can be done with little work and will not harm the finish as long as it is not aluminum. Keep us posted if the flush/clean does not work then take bolt out and take it apart because somthing is off with firing pin or it assembly.

my guess is a broken firing pin as well.  not an uncommon issue, but not a hard issue to resolve either.

Use a can of WD40 or RemOil with the extension on the 'spritzer" to flush out the firing pin channel.

Or......a broken firing pin will give intermittent primer contact or no primer contact.

Marlin bolts are very easy to disassemble.

A 1 piece firing pin is a nice accessory to a Marlin.

Usually someone at a Cowboy Action Shooting club can help you.
