Recently I acquired a 35 Remington from a neighbor with cancer, he has stated that his kids are not gun savvy, nor do they wish to inherit the rifle.
It's in 50% condition as it sat in a damp basement for a long period of time, I've slowed the rust & tore it completely apart,as well, cleaned it thoroughly. It's a 20" barrel but I've envisioned cutting it down to 16" for use as a trunk gun, so, is this blasphemy or should I have it re-blued & leave it in it's original state? Here's a 16" on GB http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=331207658 |

Here's a 16" on GB http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=331207658 I've got one that I'm in the middle of converting to a straight grip stock. I have considered cutting it down, but I'm going to shoot it first to see how I like the 35. (I also have Marlins in 444 and 45-70, and smaller calibers) |

The 35 Remington is one of the most underrated, and under-appreciated calibers in the world. It kills way beyond what what the ballistics say it should. It doesn't have anymore felt recoil than the 30-30, but the results on deer and hogs is like a sledgehammer in comparison. The old 35 is a real gem in the firearms world. I just wish that more people would actually try it on game, instead of trying to judge it on paper.
I'd say whack that bitch off to 16.5 inches, knock the rust off, and go forth and kill shit with it! |
| I would say it depends completely on the condition of the barrel at the end, if much worse than at the breach end or the crown is dinged up, cut it to 18.5 or 16. If not, why bother. A 20" lever is still pretty handy. I like 35 rem, and wanted one til I found my 375 win. I'd still want one if there were better bullet selection for tube mag in 35 cal. |

Hell of a caliber under 200yds. |

Well, considering I'm on dialysis & waiting for a Kidney transplant, I have no problem waiting a year.
So long as they keep me informed of lifes woes I'm good with it, I sent my Model 97 to be worked on & it sat for a year. When I contacted the Smith he was fighting Cancer & hadn't touched it, his wife was kind enough to ship it back at no cost to me. It's sad that he became ill, but leaving people to wonder isn't the proper thing to do. (IMHO) |

One of my big pet peeves is when someone quotes you say 2 months and it ends up taking 7 or 8 and they never inform you of a delay. Status updates once a month or so would go a long ways instead me having to call because I have not heard from you in 5 months. |

Once a month isn't really required, but if you quote me to 2-3 months & the time a lotted lapses, Do Not get your panties in a bunch because I call for an update.
If your back logged with work a courtesy call at the 3 month mark should be standard procedure. A little courtesy goes a long way in my book. (my .02) |

Hell, I waited more than five years for a rifle which was quoted at six months. |

I'd have no problem taking a beat up 35 Rem and having some fun with it. New ammo (LeverEvolution) makes it an even better sledge-hammer that it already is. I'm not sure about cutting the barrel, but, either way I don't think you can go wrong.
I'd clean up the metal and have it all parkerized. |

I wasn't a big fan of the forward Scout Scope mount. Then I did some more reading on it & now my view of it has changed (no pun intended
