Just picked up a 30-30 Western Fields 740 A-EMN for 100 bucks from a member here on Arfcom, ill post pics later, its in pretty good condition, has very little rust and some scratches but other than that seems to be fine. Came with some boxes of old winchester bullets too!

Forgive my ignorance, but it looks like a Marlin. What is it, and by that I mean who manufactured it?

Now that you have some bullets you can take up reloading.

From the research I did it is essentially a Marlin 336 with a fake maple stock. Otherwise it is exactly the same, just contracted and manufactured by Western Field.

Pic isn't working now.  Straight grip or pistol grip?

This one is mine, made in 1969.  This Western Field 740A-EMN is a Marlin 336 made under contract for Montgomery Wards.  They are configured like the Glenfield Model 30, dovetailed front sight, cap type fore end.  Mine has walnut stocks. There is a tan colored recoil pad (petrified) under the leather butt cuff.

Mine is a 1967, with the pistol grip.

100 bucks good deal? I have no idea how much these things are worth.

Marlin made these guns under contract for the  formerly big department stores. Sears, Montgomery Wards, Western Auto, etc..... They were all branded by the stores' signature line, but they were all Marlin.
