| I am in the market for my first lever action rifle. I would like to get a Marlin 336 30-30; Under $500. I plan on using it for hunting deer, and more than likely putting on a scope. What should I be looking for in a used lever action rifle? |

Bud's Guns has 3 different types of NEW Marlin 336s in 30-30s in stock now. A birch stocked one for $377 delivered HERE, a birch stocked one with a scope for $411 delivered HERE, or a walnut stocked one for $429 HERE. ETA: I forgot to add that, while slightly over your $500 target, Bud's also has a stainless steel 336 in 30-30 for $537 delivered HERE. |

What should I be looking for in a used lever action rifle? Look for pitting of the barrel, wear of hammer, bolt and other moving parts. Make sure the slots of screw heads are not marred or stripped, or any part of rifle is rusty and pitted. Don't buy one with that stupid cross-receiver safety. |

They are available used everywhere in my area for under $300––-even less if you're patient.
I've noticed finding one without that stupid safety, seems to command a premium. As stated above, look for rust, any crown imperfections, buggered screws indicating Bubba tried some cowboy action mods, etc. Most I've seen have lots of exterior wear, but usually are still very tight internally. |
| They are very popular for a reason. Very robust and reliable weapons. Usually you can find them cheap with low round counts. Best place to look for them is your local pawn shops. My only advise is ditch the factory rear sight and get a Lyman, Williams or Skinner rear peep sight. It is night and day and really makes a levergun stand out. |
