While a friend of mine was shooting my 1894 .44mag the lever got stuck in the open position.  He ejected a round and then the lever wouldn't move.  I got the lever back to the closed position but when I cycle it now it doesn't feel smooth like it used to.

Any idea what I should look at first?

ETA- I took it apart and reassembled it and it seems to be working fine now.  I guess I need to have someone look at it.

Marlin 1894 or Winchester 1894?   Each one can have different issues

Marlin.

One way it may happen is if the lifter is a little too short. The rim of the next case gets stuck between the lifter and the frame. Take a look at this. It may require a new lifter from Marlin. Brownell’s also has them.

Check the magtube for internal rust.

Do a search for "Marlin jam".  My .44 has done this a couple times but after a little work hasn't any further problems.

Marline jam cure. The cam in the circle on the lever has to be re welded and reshaped to block the next cartridge not to be realised prematurely( the lifter will block it better). Too much build-up and it will jam too. Now it feeds 44 mag and 44 special mixed
