Can anyone tell me what finish is on the reciever ? I removed a tang sight that had been spot welded in the front hole, cold blue does not match and the finish looks like it may be some kind of paint.
Post '64 Winchesters used a "high nickle" steel that doesn't take bluing well at all. As a matter of fact, they will just turn purple if you try to hot blue them. Winchester used some sort of iron plating over the nickle steel that took color extremely well but requires that you re-plate the gun to refinish it. Hope that helps. ––ST
That's always been a mystery. It certainly doesn't look like an iron plating that has been blued. It does look like a paint or polymer finish. Probably, your best bet would be to completely strip the receiver and refinish with a polymer like Birchwood-Casey's Perma Fin which is air cured so you don't have to bake it. Otherwise, you could send it off to somebody like Robar.
