My old man is picking up a marlin in 45-70 without a ported barrel...someone at the gunshop told him the 45-70 is a bruser so he called me a few minutes ago and asked your guys opinion on barrel porting these rifles.. Does it help ? any recomendations on gunsmith ?

I told him to shot the thing first before going through all this but hes a big recoil whimp and insisted on my asking... I'll most likely end up with the rifle if its to much for him, so i dont mind at all

any help would be great

Depends on the loads he is using, and stock design.  Standard factory loads w/ a decent stock design don't seem much different than a 30/30.  Hot hand loads and niche loads have a reputation for heavy recoil.   If he finds the recoil objectionable, I'd probably try a good recoil pad first.

My guide gun doesn't have porting.

Yeah, porting reduces muzzle jump and recoil a bit, but now you have a report that is twice as loud.

Get a good recoil pad and shoot the damn thing.
