I've got a newish Toyota 4 runner that I would like to keep an AR in.  I realize that a car is not a Safe and that given the right tools and amount of time a thief can get whatever you have in a car.  Having said that I know lots of you have a trunk gun.  How do you secure your's.  I found this Lockdown AR mag well lock that might prevent smash and grab type larceny.  Unfortunately there isn't much room under the rear seats to hide a rifle so I'm afraid locking the rifle in the back is the only option.  Look forward to your suggestions.

I use the cargo tie-downs in the back of my Suburban.  Bicycle cable and padlock, attached to tie down and run through the magwell.  Rifle is still in the mostly zipped-up black case, buried under a few blankets.  Also, back windows are 5% limo tint; additional insurance against prying eyes.

My car came w/ locks on the doors.  I use them.  All security is theater.  You could carry a Ft Knox safe around in the back of your truck, and remove the engine & carry it inside.  Give thieves long enough, they'd steal the safe & your truck.

Check out the 4runner forum there is a bunch of build threads in regards to hiding spots and building truck vault type items.  Also forums on 4x4 overlanding expeditions have a bunch of build threads that are relevant.

I have a 2013 4runner and will be building an aluminum truck lockbox once I get my welder purchased.

Do you have the third row seat option but that's going to change things quite a bit if you do?

BTW The truckvault brand truck vaults are incredibly overpriced. They are also incredibly heavy.

If you have any skill youre much better just building your own.

You could also look at whats on the market for patrol cars.  I know there's an electronic lock that wraps around an AR15 receiver that can be wired into your car's electrical system and released via button or remote.  You can also get smaller "vaults" for rifles or shotguns.

Yeah, right.  Have you actually gotten a quote from them?  $1695 for my Suburban.  No thanks.

I've seen undercover cop cars with automatic poppers. You lock the AR in a bracket and have a key fob. When you hit the button, it pops the trunk and unlocks the AR. Teir one shit.

I think this is the one I saw. It is from Big Sky Racks. I wonder how much?

How did you mount the bolts in your Tahoe ceiling? Do the bolts go all the way through the roof or some bolts/studs into a roof cross member and then reinstall the headliners?  Nice system!

I started out looking to have a bracket made that would mount to the hanger mount points on each side but decided that was going to be too much trouble so I just drilled all the way through the roof and used stainless steel bolts. I used liberal amounts of silicone. No leaks after about two years..

Side note if you search for SUV drawers on expedition portal or forum theres a 200 page thread with all sorts of ideas for doing your own truck vault.

I have a Tufloc single M4 rack lag bolted to the studs in my master closet.  I'm just working up the courage needed to drill some holes into my truck to mount one in there.

I've used a simple bike cable with a 4 or 5 digit combo lock so that I don't have to remove the vehicles keys to retrieve the rifle. Secure the loose end to the seat belt attachment point. Simple and effective.

You can find used Truckvaults on eBay, craigslist, and other places.  I found one at the shop that outfits police cars.  They actually take trade-ins on the Truckvaults.   I found one (a one drawer model that came out of Tahoe) for $350.00.  Shop around and you'll be able to find a used one.

I have no personal experience but know a couple guys who like theirs. I haven't messed with them enough to give an opinion either way. But it's about the best price for a metal drawer that I've found. I'd get one to try but need some specific dimensions for mine won't work equipment and for when we go camping. Also want pull out table and cooler extensions on mine.
