I got the call and my Fort Knox will be in soon, but the delivery company will only deliver to my garage. I'm surprised Fort Knox's shipping doesn't offer options.
Anyway I need to get this safe into my "walk-out" basement. I'd need to roll a 1500 lb safe down hill into my backyard which I highly doubt I'll do on my own safely.

How much does it cost?

I would charge +/- $675 here in the St. Louis area.  That's assuming it could be done by hand without any heavy equipment.

See if you can throw a few $$'s at the delivery guy to pull around front to the basement and at least set it there for you.

When we unloaded my dad's safe we pulled the truck around to the front of the house and unloaded it with the tractor.  Then manhandled it into the basement.

Most of these delivery guys prefer to keep their tractor trailers on hard pavement.  The boss tends to frown upon the need to winch them out of yards.

In the Atlanta area, there's a company that specializes in it. I shipped it to their dock which saves freight and allows them to have the safe in hand rather than timing arrival. They charge 4-500 for a typical 1000-1800 lb safe.

Here in dfw I had a company who sells safe but also moves them. They charge $150 to move it within 20 miles

If you have a flat bed trailer and a quad or side by side, you could make easy work out of it.

You could have them deliver your safe to the back of your pickup and then off load it by your basement entrance.  I do this with a lot of large stuff.  Some things I have delivered to the wife's work where they have a forklift to put it in my truck.

Look on Craigslist. Search for "safe mover" there should be several heavy equpment movers in your area. Here is an example of one that does this in the Phoenix area.

Safe Mover

I am not affiliated with this business but have called him in anticipation of getting a used safe.

Provided he can get a vehicle (pickup truck) and trailer around to the back of your house, it'd probably be in the $500 range.

I must be lucky.  I paid a guy $40, including his tip, to move my safe inside from the garage.

I understand the back yard being more expensive, but some of the prices I'm seeing here are crazy.

I paid $175 to move 2 safes from my house out into my garage.  Considering how tight it was in my house and the fact that he didn't hit anything I think he was well worth it.  He didn't spend much actual time moving them but I paid for his skill and the knowledge that I wouldn't throw out my back trying to do it myself.

Most people have no idea what the expenses of operating a legitimate business are.  When you're unlicensed, inexperienced, under-equipped, not paying taxes, and uninsured, you can work at a lower price point.

I asked about delivery, not curbside drop off.  Fort Knox could have mentioned I'm paying for curbside only.

I paid $200 to move mine last month.  Safe company / locksmith.  They moved it from inside my apartment to inside my new house and offered to bolt it down for $40.

2nd quote was 575 minimum.
2 other moving companies turned me down.

Mine was $300 to move a BF6636 HD, which is about 1,600 pounds.  Mine was similar, down my driveway (hill) and into garage then basement.   Didn't take them long, about 25 minutes including leveling.

I have an 850 pound Liberty Fatboy that will get moved in the near future (currently renting, but buying soon). Might talk to the guys that delivered my safe in the first place to see if they can help with that.

Call up some of the local companies that sell safes and see who they use. I know when I was looking several of them used an outside company for the moving duties. Prices seemed reasonable compared to what you are seeing. $150-$200 IIRC.

I bought my own dolly with straps when I needed to move my safes to my new house

It aint that difficult. 3 average men and a dolly can move just about any safe a reasonable distance and yes up and down steps also

That's because the local companies know that they can't afford to operate legitimately, and so they assume they can shift the liability by having an illegitimate third party take care of it.

We have this conversation all of the time.  It is impossible to do these types of deliveries for $200 while doing everything above board.  Anybody doing them for that is cutting serious corners somewhere.  After you get that $200 quote ask them for proof of insurance.   Do you know how many times people ask me for proof?  Never.  And if they aren't asking me, I know they aren't asking the guys who don't have it.

And who's coming into your home, aside from somebody who's not insured which will make you entirely liable for any damage or injuries that occur on your property?  You think the guy working for a few bucks has had a proper background check done?  You think they've been trained in any capacity?

Even professional moving companies are getting away from even attempting to move safes.  They have had too many accidents, and too many deaths/injuries.  They are subbing out the work to specialists, and those guys don't work for peanuts.  You've got to pay the bills.

Seems to me you could rent a bobcat with forks and carry it right to your back door on the skid.from there some Masonite/plywood and dowels would roll it around pretty easy.
You couldent have thought the trucker was going to put it in your basement?

I thought it was a delivery company, not a freight carrier.

When I buy furniture or something large the delivery agents install the furniture and remove the waste, some do so included in the price and some charge a nominal fee.
Same thing happened when I bought a heavy commercial laser printer. Shipping was free, "white glove" was extra.
I have a cousin who used to work for a mattress company and sold me a premium mattress at her discount. Freight with a carrier would have been $800, and a moving company shipped it instead for $220 and set it up on my bed too. She saved me a lot of money.

Some local safe companies will deliver and install for free, but it's probably accounted for in the price of the safe.

It's not that a freight company only wheeling it to the garage is incomprehensible, it's frustrating that it never came up in conversation with Ryan.

Without stairs / hills, you don't even need a dolly.  We did it all with four sticks that were basically 2x4s with carpet on the bottom and slick plastic on the top.

Once you get the safe on two sticks, push it to the end and lay the next two sticks down in the general direction you want to go.

This was a Liberty Fatboy, too.  Moved it around like it was 100 lbs.

My last quote was $450 which I'm going with. It's a safe company moving it for me.
